Hello All, trying to figure out how to get my buds compact and hard

When I get a bag of great buds it's hard and compact...

When I grow some bud... it's kind of airly and loose

    what am I missing??

Bud density is mostly genetic. Some strains grow hard and dense under any conditions, some stay airy and fluffy. Generally an INDICA based strain will be short and compact with denser buds while a SATIVA based strain has lighter and airy buds. Thats just a broad general description, and there are exceptions.

Airy buds can also be caused by high temps in the room, and particularily at the plant tops. Do a search for the term "foxtail" and you will see what overheated buds can look like.

High Nitrogen in the fertilizer during blooming can cause stretched buds too. For bloom, you need to cut back on the nitrogen.

A plant that has run out of root space may also lead to skimpy buds.

Plants bloomed under low light can have skimpy buds. Good luck

Now I don't know this from experience, although I have read it somewhere and have a friend that swears by it. So I've heard that air circulation helps tighten buds. My friend puts a low output fan on directly on his ladies, it makes the plant sturdier and supposedly tightens buds. Worth a try if you aren't already.

We need to know the condition of the grow space.

100% in agreement with MiLeenaLee, air circulation might help that, but it also strengthens your plants stems and thats a good thing :D

MH - for compact dense bud, HPS - for fluffy light bud

The debate between HPS & MH has been around forever. You can find "facts" about the pros and cons of either. While HPS provides more red lumens, and MH provides more blue lumens, there is a lot more involved in bud density. Genetics, and then envrionmental conditions have the largest part in bud density. You cant expect that just because you use a MH, the buds will be rock hard, and just because you use a HPS, your buds will be light and fluffy.

CO2 also works to tighten and beefen up your buds, give that a try...try using additives, something along the line of big bud, fat flower or monster bud...;pass

IF your lights are not close enough to the plant this could cause stretching between the nodes, causing the buds to be longer but more airy, But this is just ONE thing that could cause it .. all the posts had great ideas... start with the cheapest one if it dont work try the next
    Good luck..

Try a 0-0-1 or 0-0-5 fert, also according to a book I have been reading (picked up the medical grow bible last night) if you add sugar to your plants you will get a 20% larger yield.

compress them, sit on them. Than will do it, especially when they are fairly fresh.
Personally I like mine un-squished, but if I take some fresh in a bag and put it in my pocket the buds compact everytime.
