Question What is bottle-necking my PC performance?

My PC Info:
Manufacturer: Compaq Presario 061
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3800+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.4GHz
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Hard Drive: 191 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

I don't seem to be getting as much FPS on certain games as I think I should be gettin, like CoD5 30-50 FPS, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 20-26 FPS(it has a frame limit of 30), BioShock 30-50 FPS. I mean does this sound like I'm getting what I should be getting and I needa upgrade something in my rig or is there something wrong here?

The processor is a little slow.... Also the ram could be bumped up a little bit.

also, im sure your front side bus is holding you back. a mobo/cpu combo would bring you up to speed until youre ready for a shiny new video card.

Also if you have all those games downloaded to your pc, they might be taking up too much room

Re: What is bottle-necking my PC performance?

No offense to all my stoner buddies here, but this is the wrong place to be asking for computer help. Try this website: [H]ard|Forum - Powered by vBulletin Ive been a member there for years. Set up a thread in the computer help section and about 1000 hardware junkies will tell you everything you will ever need to know.

Your fps you are getting is actually about on par with your system specs. remember your eyes wont notice a difference with anything over 30 or so fps. Red Alert 3 will be fine with those FPS its a RTS game after all.

Hard drive space doesn't mean shit when it comes to actual performance, unless of course you fill the hard drive all the way up.

Couple of questions, what operations system are you running? Vista or XP? What resolution are you running your monitor at? and the games for that matter? BTW Token, he is running an Athlon64 system, he does not have a front side bus to worry about. All Athlons have integrated memory controlers on them. That Athlon probably still gives him more memory bandwidth than most Core 2 Duos. But that does not equal to greater performance.

And since you are running a Socket 939 3800+ Single Core (the dual core 3800s run at 1.8Ghz) and i would assume 2 Gigs of DDR400. You can always pick up a cheap dual core processor for your Socket 939. But I will warn you, ya won't see a big performance increase.

But if you are wanting to just get more frames out of what you have now you could always try changing the resolution on your monitor, dropping down some of the graphics settings like AA, AF, and what not.

Re: What is bottle-necking my PC performance?

i agree with turning down the resolutions, textures, and other details along those lines (shadows, reflections, glare or whatever), thats probably the best way to squeeze out the best of your performance for a quick fix.

I have to that with most modern games to get the best out of them.
