Yeah thats true I have heard that a lot of people had to send theirs in to get it fixed....but here are a couple things to condsder:
1. Most of the time it is from overheating. If not played for more than six hours and stored in a open area for airflow.....it extends the life, and as far as I am concerned, falls under maintaining the product properly.
2. Most of the problems were in the first years of production, if you buy a new one now, you chances of having a problem are very slim.
3. Microsoft extended their manufactures waranty also.
4. A lot of the people I know had no problems when dealing with microsoft. Except for they had to send back mulitiple systems.....and in some cases I know microsoft has upgraded people to the elite system......they know there is a problem, anyway.
About the playstation 3, I think I learned enough about lasers from the playstation2 problems to know I wouldnt use my ps3 for anything other than playing sweetass games. When I can afford a HD TV, which would be the only reason I would ever geta blue ray player, I would also probably be able to afford a true blue ray player, an HD player, or a hybrid unit even. Bringing the devices together is a notoriously bad idea.
