All the games you mentioned are good, but Steam is the devil. Ask any hardcore gamer and they'll confirm, Steam is the gaming equivalent to the anti-christ.
This is relevant to this thread, so I'll just post it here...
You all need to play Portal. Its amazing, and anyone who doesn't play it is seriously missing out.
(Also worth note, the game Portal came to my attention because it was actually a student game project of some people who used to go to my school, and when they graduated Valve scooped them up and gave them a job redesigning it around the HL2 engine...so...rock on! lol)
Portal is GOD. Mushrooms + Portal = Hours of entertainment!
Although what you said IS true, because i FUCKING hate Steam myself. Where would CS:S and HL2 DM be without it? And Portal of course... And tell your friends congrats on that! What an accomplishment..

I think theres a lot of benevolent alternatives to the evils of steam that would have put HL2 DM and CSS in the same places they are today, and probably would have made them more popular because I know a lot of people who stopped playing for the express reason that their steam accounts locked them out.
Also, I didnt actually know the students who made the game, they just went to my school a couple of years ago and made the game as a student project. On a side note, at our school halloween pumpkin contest, at least 2 of the pumpkins were in tribute to Portal.
Man steam sucks.
CSS doesnt though been monging to it for a while now. I find i get worse though but notice when i sober up as i get better.
I got banned on steam cos they thought i was hacking had to but CSS again.
