Stoner Buck$$: 1,129.12 | The snow is gone...but... the water is still here. take a look at this picture of the iowa river which cuts right thru down town iowa city. we had so much rain last summer combined with record amounts of snow this winters and now that its all melted we are left with a serious flooding situation its getting real bad in marengo about 20 minutes from here.

Man, that is really sad DBoone. You kept us posted on your winter. I guess the flooding was inevitable. Good Luck to all of you in the mid-west.

Stoner Buck$$: 751.40 | Re: The snow is gone...but... In 1996 we had a huge flood here in Pennsylvania from snow melting too fast and rain in March. Destroyed all our riverbanks and structures along the river. I live in a valley and the river is at the bottom and I've never seen it get so high. I have always been told it would be impossible for it to flood here in the valley, it came pretty darn close that year.
Next time I am near the dam I will take pictures and try to explain how high it was and I'll show all the rebuilding done. Im going fishing this weekend maybe I'll head down towards one of the dams.
DBoone that spillway is scary.

Actually I remember the 93 floods quite well, went south on 35 that summer and the water level was still high (not flood stage high but it looked like most of Iowa was one big river)
Hope it doesn't get that bad this time.

Stoner Buck$$: 1,129.12 | Re: The snow is gone...but... its starting to get bad again here the national weather service is predicting major flooding to occur today and throughout the next week here in iowa city due to the massive amount of water upstream in the reservoir the dam literally is being pushed to its limits it can not hold any more water back.
the first picture is the emergency spillway in 1993 the water rose to 5 feet above that point and cause serious flood damage to iowa city. right now it is less than a foot away from going over that point. the second 2 pics are of the beach which you cannot see because it is under 10 feet of water.
and the other pics are of one of the university's residence halls which has been evacuated.
i have more pics that i will upload here soon. |
