Stoner Buck$$: 32.61 | Re: favourite sports? u know it may seem suprising but california also has lots of good wrestlers at the high school level. our state tournament is hella hard to place in or even qualify for because we dont break it up into 5 different meets. we have one big one.
gettin high actually doesnt affect my wrestling too much either. i just get shit for it and i'm one of the better ones on my team. |

Stoner Buck$$: 1,126.28 | Hawks ride defense to shock No. 6 Spartans Sunday, January 13, 2008 SIMPLY STUNNING Hawks ride defense to shock No. 6 Spartans Michigan State brought its talent and depth, its No. 6 ranking, its 14-1 record, its celebrated head coach and roughly 100 boisterous fans into Saturday's game against Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa, on the other hand, brought the embarrassment of losing by 31 points at Ohio State on Wednesday, a depleted roster and a 7-9 record into the game. So just when you think the Hawkeyes are about to get pounded again, they instead did what many assumed was impossible. Iowa held Michigan State to its lowest point since 1952 and held on to win 43-36 before a season-high crowd of 13,044 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The fans then stormed the court to celebrate Todd Lickliter's first Big Ten victory as the Iowa head coach. "It was kind of reminiscent of my freshman year," junior guard Tony Freeman said of the fans rushing the court. "We beat a lot of top 25 (teams) my freshman year and had guys storm the court. "So it was real exciting. But we've got to move on and prepare for Purdue." Moving on to Wednesday's home game against Purdue will be a lot easier after coming off such an emotional victory. "We were awfully down after Wednesday, nobody liked that," Lickliter said. "And you basically have two things that you can do. "Our guys chose the right thing. They came back and prepared well and competed." One of the keys for Iowa Saturday was that it controlled the tempo for most of the game. Michigan State (14-2) bolted to an 18-9 lead but then was held scoreless for the final eight minutes of the first half and for the first two minutes in the second half. "We thought it was important to play more in the half court more than in the full court," said Lickliter, who improved to 7-7 against ranked opponents. "We were able to do that. And I thought we defended with a better purpose, which is very important. "And when you do that, you're able to rebound the ball a little bit." Besides being Lickliter's first Big Ten victory, it also marked the first time since a 45-42 victory over North Carolina State on Nov. 30, 2005, that Iowa prevailed when it scored fewer than 50 points. The Hawkeyes only made 11 field-goal attempts, which is a season low, and they also missed 13 free throws, including 11 in the second half. Senior Justin Johnson, the team's leading scorer with a 15.1 points per game average, was held to a season low two points on 1-for-11 shooting from the field. Johnson missed all seven of his 3-point attempts. But Iowa compensated by playing hard on defense and by holding its own on the boards against one of the best rebounding teams in the country. Michigan State only made 16-of-52 field-goal attempts and committed 18 turnovers. "I think our defense (played) a major role for us," said senior forward Seth Gorney, who didn't score a point Saturday but finished with six rebounds, two blocks and one steal. "That was probably the only way we were going to win with the way our shots weren't falling. "I think we did a great job playing against them. We matched up real well. We knew our responsibilities and our assignments and went out and performed tonight." Gorney said it was big giving Lickliter his first conference victory. "It will be one of many, I'm sure," Gorney said. Meanwhile, to say that Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was disappointed with his team's performance would be an understatement. Izzo ripped his players, but he also made a point to give credit to Iowa and to Lickliter. "I am very disappointed. I thought that was one of the poorest overall games we've played maybe since I've been head coach," said Izzo, who has led Michigan State to four NCAA Tournament Final Fours and to the 2000 national title. "It was a total breakdown by every player on our team, and that doesn't happen very often. I don't think it will happen again, but practices will be more fun again. "And then when I talk like that I'm not being fair to Todd and his team. To do what he did and to get them back off what they went through (against Ohio State) deserves a lot of credit." There was a buzz inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena at halftime with Iowa clinging to a 20-18 lead. It marked the first time since the Northern Iowa game on Dec. 5 that Iowa led at halftime. The excitement continued to build in the second half when it became apparent that Iowa wasn't going to fold. Freeman made five of Iowa's 11 baskets, all coming from 3-point range. His final two treys were arguably the biggest baskets in the game. Freeman made a 3-pointer with 4 minutes, 43 seconds left to play after Michigan State had cut the deficit to 31-30. He then made another trey from beyond the top of the key that pushed the lead to 39-34 with 1:11 left to play. The Hawkeyes also made four of their final six free throws, including two by Freeman that expanded the lead to 41-34 with 53.4 seconds left to play. "Playing in the Big Ten you've got to have a short memory," said Freeman, who finished with a career-high 22 points. "You take the good with the bad. "The bad was Wednesday and the good was tonight." |

Stoner Buck$$: 1,126.28 | #1 Iowa Beats Minnesota Saturday, February 2, 2008 TURNAROUND MINNEAPOLIS -- This Iowa wrestling team doesn't spend much time studying its history, but it was clear Friday night the Hawkeyes had a few past events in mind. Iowa reversed outcomes in four individual matches that led the top-ranked Hawkeyes to a turnaround in the Border Brawl from the past two years. Iowa won six matches and sophomores Joey Slaton, Dan LeClere, Jay Borschel and Phil Keddy avenged losses, fueling a 20-13 victory against Minnesota in front of 7,474 at Williams Arena. The Gophers had won the previous meetings in the series, claiming their two most lopsided wins over the Hawkeyes in more than 60 years and limiting Iowa to just three takedowns last year in a 29-13 win in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. "There was a lot of payback for us," Iowa coach Tom Brands said. "There's a lot of turnaround there." Slaton and LeClere posted victories against top-five opponents in the first three matches that boosted the Hawkeyes early, and Keddy's victory against fifth-ranked Roger Kish put a stamp on Iowa's victory in the first showdown between the two teams that could be battling for the NCAA title in March. Both teams will have a different look in six weeks when they meet again at the Big Ten Championships. Neither team had its NCAA champion in the lineup. Iowa 165-pounder Mark Perry Jr. is expected to return later in the month from knee surgery. Minnesota's Dustin Schlatter's hamstring injury prevented the marquee match of the dual from taking place. The second-ranked junior would've faced No. 1 Brent Metcalf at 149. "He's not ready," Minnesota coach J Robinson said. "We looked at him yesterday, and he's not ready. It's six weeks before the Big Tens and there's no reason to put him out there." Nevertheless, the dual wasn't short on drama. The Hawkeyes (15-1) gained an upper-hand after getting victories from Slaton and LeClere and a technical fall from Metcalf against Minnesota freshman Luke Mellmer. Heavyweight Matt Fields sealed the win for the Hawkeyes with a 7-3 win against Ben Berhow. "You let two of those first three get away from us and that was the whole meet right there," Robinson said. "We've just got to learn from it and go on." The Hawkeyes showcased Friday what they learned from prior mistakes. Slaton had been pinned by Minnesota's Mack Reiter two years ago in the previous collegiate match between the Iowa high school standouts. But third-ranked Slaton seized control of the match by scoring two takedo | |
