Everyone does it in some way or another, it's the only way people can do it really, from when you are born you have the world described to you and explained what is what, whatever you have described to you isn't right and it isn't wrong it's just someone elses reality, nearly everyones reality is based on the consensus of society, that includes creationisits, shaman, magicians, atheisists, and everyone else.
In a particular amazonian culture they used to select who would be the shaman for teh tribe in their early infancy and then keep them in a dark cave untill they hit puberty. Today that would seem like child abuse to many, the selected child would go out into the phisical worlds knowing nothing more of it than the dark cave. The mechanisms there are two fold, first of all whilst having little phisical stimuli the "psychic" senses would have evolved far far more than they would have done otherwise, and also the kid would have very few preconceived ideas about phisical reality and what it was/wasn't.
