Ph is 3.5 - 4.0...

I need to raise it to 7.0? How do I do this? Plant is 3 weeks old & looking very well but fear this will not be for long if I don't raise the ph. growing in soil, I've heard bicarbonate of soda will work but in what quantity? that would be really easy for me to get hold of.

Re: Ph is 3.5 - 4.0...

Before adding anything at all, I would flush the soil. Run water through the pot for a good amount of time to pull the salts out of the soil. What kind of dirt do you have?

Re: Ph is 3.5 - 4.0...

compost is:-

JOHN INNES POTTING COMPOST No.3
a richer mixture for final re-potting of gross feeding vegetable plants and for mature foliage plants and shrubs in interior planters or outdoor containers.
7 Loam
3 Peat
2 Sand
each cubic metre of mix, add
0.6kg ground limestone
3.6kg hoof and horn meal
3.6kg superphosphate
1.8kg potassium sulphate
John Innes Composts explained

I added to this a cup of vermiculite & a cup of perlite & 1tbs of fish, blood & bone, to each 9" pot. I have used miracle grow 24-8-16 in 1/2 strength up to now.

Wow, I know nothing about growing in compost, or even if flushing it is a good idea. Hold off until someone comes along with more experience with your medium.

Re: Ph is 3.5 - 4.0...

I've read that hydrated lime or dolomite lime should be used to raise ph, I have found this but it is used for building cement, is it the same stuff used for plants, anyone know?

Re: Ph is 3.5 - 4.0...

ok I got some garden lime

Vitax Garden Lime Carton 3 Kg :: Garden Centre Online

I dissolved 50g in 2L of water & watered 1 plant with it, see how it goes.
I have tested my tap water ph & it's about 5.5, the lime & water mix is also 5.5 which confuses me as I thought it would be more alkaline? After watering the plant the ph has gone down to 3.0 so I really don't know whats going on. Never had problems like this before.

Re: Ph is 3.5 - 4.0...

ok i will try to find out a solution to help ya out.......
Raising the soil pH to make it more alkaline

Generally speaking, it is easier to make soils more alkaline than it is to make them more acid. Because different soil types react in different ways to the application of lime you will have to add more lime to clay soils and peaty soils than you will in sandy soils to achieve the same result.
To increase your pH by 1.0 point and make your soil more alkaline:
  • Add 4 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard in sandy soils
  • Add 8 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard in loamy soils
  • Add 12 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard in clay soils
  • Add 25 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard in peaty soils

Correction of an overly acid soil should be considered a long term project, rather than trying to accomplish it in one year. It is better to test your soil each year and make your adjustments gradually. The addition of hardwood ash, bone meal, crushed marble, or crushed oyster shells will also help to raise the soil pH

Soil pH - Acid Soil or Alkaline Soil - What You Need to Know theres another link that may help

Re: Ph is 3.5 - 4.0...

Well after adding 350g of lime to each plant gradually the ph has been rising to between 6.5 & 7.0 now which is great, I have noticed though that the dryer the soil gets, the higher the ph gets, haven't watered for about a week & the moisture meter still says wet, the pots are getting lighter so I'll water soon.
