The Taoiseach has led tributes to singer Ronnie Drew who has died following a long illness. Mr Cowen said that the Dubliners singer had been an iconic figure in Irish music over the past five decades and that his unique singing voice had been enjoyed by many people.

Phelim Drew said his father passed away peacefully in St Vincent's Private hospital this afternoon, aged 73. Mr Cowen added that Drew, whether as part of the Dubliners or during his solo career, will be remembered for his promotion of Irish music both at home and around the globe.

Drew founded the then Ronnie Drew Group in 1962 which later came to be known as The Dubliners. The group included fellow Irish music legends Luke Kelly, Ciaran Bourke and Barney McKenna. While Kelly was known for singing their soulful ballads, Drew will be best remembered for his gravelly-voiced renditions of rabble-rousing folk songs, like Finnegan's Wake and Dicey Reilly.

Drew sang one of the band's biggest commercial hits, when they entered the UK top 10 in 1967 with Seven Drunken Nights and appeared on the BBC's Top of the Pops. In 1995 they appeared once again on the show with Shane McGowan and the Pogues, who performed with Drew on their single The Irish Rover.

Born in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, in 1934, Drew underwent six months' treatment for throat cancer two years ago. His wife of more than 40 years, Deirdre, died last year. The couple lived in Greystones, Co Wicklow.
He is survived by his two children and five grandchildren.

The President Mary McAleese has joined in the tributes to Mr Drew.
The President said: 'It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of the great Irish singer Ronnie Drew'. She said he was a champion of traditional Irish music and with The Dubliners re-energised and refreshened Ireland's unique musical heritage. Mrs McAleese said that Mr Drew 'will be greatly missed by many, but most particularly by his family with whom our thoughts are today'.

The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen, has expressed his sadness on the death of Mr Drew. Mr Cullen described the singer as a truly Dublin icon and part of our modern folk history. He said 'I am sure he will be missed tonight from 'Raglan Road' to Fitzgibbon Street' and in all parts of the city of Dublin which he so romanticised about in his music and song'.

I just CANNOT get over how freakin catchy it is...
I have never ever been a fan of weezer... in fact I come close to really disliking them after that fucking beverly hills song...
But this is truly a work of art!
You got two different ways of looking at this...

A:The music is so simple to play a 13 year old just picking up a guitar could play it. Hell I've already learned how to play it on bass, guitar, and drums. There's not much there as far as crazy hard stuff to play or cool music writing... HOWEVER...

B:It's accomplishing EXACTLY what this song was set out to do... it's all the song is about. These days, the music industry is... well, in fact just that. an INDUSTRY. Making a product to appeal to people so that they will buy it. Rather it be a spatula,a car,a song, or one of those rad SSV's I got my eye on. Every day I hear about people bitching and moaning about bands selling out... Well in the case of Weezer, at least they are open and blatant about it. And even more still, is the fact that they are intelligent enough to use that "selling out" to their advantage. Putting the video on youtube first and including all the great internet Memes and jokes in there is pure genius.

I may never care about another one of their albums or songs but this one has me hooked.

The politically outspoken rap-rock band said Thursday it will perform at the Tent State Music Festival to End the War on Aug. 27 at the Denver Coliseum. Others scheduled to perform are the Denver band The Flobots, The Coup, State Radio and Wayne Kramer.
Rage Against the Machine also has a concert scheduled Sept. 3 in Minneapolis, during the Republican National Convention in the adjacent city of St. Paul.
The Denver festival is hosted by Tent State University and Iraq Veterans Against the War. Organizers say about 8,000 tickets will be given away free by lottery.
Lottery entries will be accepted 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Aug. 24-26 at downtown Denver's Cuernavaca Park, Tent State University's base for the convention. Winners will be notified the evening of Aug. 26.
The Democratic National Convention will be Aug. 25-28.
Tent State University describes itself as a college campus-based movement aimed at ending the Iraq war.
The group originally sought to camp at Denver's 314-acre City Park during the convention, but the city said a park curfew would prevent anyone from staying overnight.
Tent State then decided to move to Cuernavaca Park, which is smaller but closer to the Pepsi Center, where most of the convention will be held.

PS - TOKIN we gotta get to this show, oh man will it be awesome. I dint know the Flobots were from Denver.

http://www.musicovery.com

Basically you have all these settings (50s, 60s, 70s, RnB, vocal pop, rock etc) and you can choose what kind of mood you're in (dark, energetic, positive, calm) and it automatically finds a song matching your mood and desired settings. I find it quite enjoyable to listen to random songs while im smoking cuz theres an element of surprise as well. plus, you get to discover some pretty fucking good songs you didnt know before lol

My bud and I just completed our first CD and we'd love for you to check it out - Planet AutoStar: Music For Your Mind - Chill Out - Relax - Ambient Geek House - it'll load one minute, high quality samples of each track. Very trippy stuff - could be just what you'd dig. Ambient, acid-house kind-of stuff.

We're not lookin' to make any serious bread with this, just to sell enough copies to cover our expenses - to turn a seriously expensive hobby into an expensive hobby.

New Slightly Stoopid album comes out today. Who's as excited as I am? It's called "Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid" and I'm sure it's gonna be my new favorite album to get high to this summer. They're starting a tour called the Tailgate Tour in August.
Some of the new songs (and all the dates for the Tailgate Tour) are on their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/stoopid. Check it out! I'll be at the NYC date, who else is going?

Hi all-
I have to recommend a new artist to everyone as I love sharing new music finds. I was stoned out of my mind last night so I started watching Daryl Hall’s online show “Live at Daryl’s House”, and I’m sitting there with a box of Whoppers, thinkin about "Maneater", until I heard the band he was featuring. This artist outta Philly called Mutlu was playing with Daryl along with Chuck Prophet. Has anyone else heard of this guy Mutlu?

Kinda similar to G-Love, Shuggie Otis, just to give you an idea. Very chill 420 music. Today I looked at Mutlu's myspace and got a free download of a track off the new album which comes out 7/22. Very cool.

That's my gift from me to you.
