yeah so i came home to a bunch of small gnats around my plant and i know they'll be an annoyance. I heard there's dust or mineral powder you can use to keep them off, but my bro has a chinchilla and uses some gray dust that they bathe in, would this stuff work?

Pretty sure any insecticide will work. There are also some home remedy's to get rid of bugs. Maybe some around the forum.

Yea 7 dust works great, but you aren't supposed to use it on anything you are going to ingest.

i usually apply it the same way i do pollen when im making seeds for the next batch. take a real fine brush, kind of like what women use to put on blush, and dip it into the dust. lightly apply it to the leaves only! never actually put it on the buds as 7 dust can and will kill u if you inhale it. no i dont know that for a fact but better safe than sorry!

Yeah I had the same problem, but went to the local nursery and got the workers to point me the right direction on what to get. Thats what I recommend to you.

damn maybe i should stay away from that 7 dust stuff then, but is insecticide even good for the soil or plant??? and what insecticide label would anyone suggest so i dont choose the wrong thing? I also read awhile ago on the site that putting sand on top of the soil stops them cuts em up or something, and then you leave a bowl of vinegar that they fall into or something.

If you use any insecticide, look for "food-grade" on the label (or something saying it's safe to use on vegetables/fruits). I don't think sand cuts them up, that would probably be Diatomaceous Earth - Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade . The sand is porous enough that it lets the water through, but dries quickly enough that it deprives the bugs of a breeding ground.

I had a major problem with fungus gnats & tried a couple of different things. The best solution ended up being a little neem leaf powder. Any health food store should carry it in capsules & I often see bottles of 60 capsules for under 5 bucks. Sprinkling the contents of a few capsules (say 3-4 for a 6" diameter pot) evenly over just the top of the soil takes care of the problem within 48 hours. I haven't needed to spray or treat the actual plants above the soil with anything. Have only needed to do this every few weeks.
Neem oil, which come form the fruit/seed part of the tree, is also used as an agricultural insecticide and is safe, but stinks to high heaven, would have to be thinned and sprayed (more likely to affect th plant), and is more expensive. Also it's a lot harder to wash this stuff off a plant that will be smoked than it is to wash it off a tomato or melon that will be eaten, and again, The Stink! could really mess with the plant's flavor, even if you only use it on the soil.
The leaf power is safe to ingest and doesn't reek. And a bottle of capsules (which is cheap) should last several grows if that's all you use it for.
Hope this helps,
h
