I'm actually doing a trial right now with tomatoes; I go two seedlings of the same heirloom tomato and planted one in the topsy planter, one in the ground. Fed them the same. After about six weeks, the one in the ground is three times the size of the one in the planter.
Granted, the one in the planter is healthy and blossoming and looks cool on my deck, but I think it's more of a novelty than anything.
Not sure how that would translate into growing weed. It would probably work to some extent because MJ *is* a weed and will grow almost in spite of you in halfway-decent outdoor conditions. Worth a try if security isn't an issue, I suppose.
