Stoner Buck$$: 659.07 | Who here has successfully quit smoking?
So right now I'm in the process of quitting tobacco. I usually have 5-6 smokes a day, either a cigarillo or a bowl of pipe tobacco (which I inhale). I actually went several months smoking every day, inhaling fully and getting the nicotine high, and I could still quit whenever I wanted. I'd go 3 or 4 months smoking non-stop, then just say "to hell with it" and stop for a week, no problem. So I figured I was immune to nicotine addiction.
But now, after 10 months of it, I'm finally addicted and having a bitch of a time quitting. I really don't buy this "it's as addictive as heroin" crap, because I've gone through only partial oxycodone withdrawal and let me tell you, it's WAAAYYY more intense and horrible. It's Hell, in fact. But I digress...
Anyway, yesterday I bought some 2mg Nicoderm gum for the first time. I just had a craving for a smoke about 20 minutes ago, started chewing a piece, and I'm still having the same craving while still chewing it. I swear this stuff is a placebo or something...
So has anybody else found the gum to be as useless? Is there a better method I could try? My lungs feel gross, and I can't smoke weed as a substitute because if I toke more than 2 or 3 hoots, it actually worsens my pain hugely.
I tell ya, it seems just bizarre to me that Alcohol and Tobacco are the two drugs we keep legal. I don't agree with imprisoning anybody for using any drug, but these two are so far from the safest, and they both meet the DEA's Schedule 1 guidelines, moreso than most drugs.

I hear ya Dude, I have quit several times in my life..the longest was 8 yrs!! you start back a little slowly with no problem and then one day, it is again..nic patches really do help with the physical part, you still feel like doing it but the nicotine demon doesn't roar so much. The biggest prob with em is that the same adhesive sucks!! When working outside I had to duct tape them on..lol..the other thing is the cost, they not cheap. I am not smoking now and the bad news is 90% of it is in your head..like any drug, it's called, "chasing the rainbow for the pot of gold" it's not going to help your stress, it won't make you happy, and it will never be enough...I found that you have to fight it as you would your worst enemy. You have to fight it with as much vengence as it gives you. The best way is that every time you get the urge, you IMMEDIATELY shout in your head "NO!" or "STOP" and don't give it the attention it is demanding...get up and do something for a few mins. to interrupt your frame of mind. Before you know it you will have forgotten about it foe a bit.
True, I have found that sometimes I was just READY to stop and it wasn't much of a battle at all, butmore times than not it was very hard.I f you just remind yourself that you don't want your lungs to hurt and it's not worth it, it will help you to stay committed. The first few days are the worst, then after a couple of weeks, it's easy to let your gaurd down and think, "just one won't hurt"...don't allow yourself to even think that...it will make the road much longer for you..best of luck to you...

My uncle went through the gum stage.. He said after a while you can get addicted to it, and for some the addiction is worse than actually being addicted to smoking.
I'm not really sure if they still do, but they used to put nicotine in the gum, as well as some of the other chemicals they put in cigarettes. He only kicked the gum after switching to tooth picks. Haha.
Good luck, Gandalf.

i had to quit for the military, i've been clean for just over 3 months now.
it's not difficult. just lame. like u feel like a lot of stuf u do is pointless, and u lose a lot of insight.
im not as good on the piano now. i mean i can tplay jazz or blues that well anymore.
as far as withdrawals go, the only thing i had was some stomache pain,
it was very light, i just couldnt tell when i was full or hungry, and it felt like a rock in my stomache, after that passed i had no more problems.
so, its not hard to quit, but if u dont have to then dont.
i still listen to some music and just think "wow, it'd be great to have a blunt right now"

Here's what you do.
Every time you get the urge to smoke, roll a joint.
then smoke the joint and go about your business.

Thanks for your replies everybody. I'm still working on exactly how I'll go about the whole quitting dealie, but I'm certain I can do it one way or another. Kinda sucks though because I also have to cut down on my oxycontin for the next 5 days since I took too much before and now have a deficite going.
However, I just remembered today that I have a hefty stash of Tramacets and Lorazepam (Ativan), both of which are great for calming the DT's. Quote:

Man, tobacco is some evil shit, isn't it? But you can't truly appreciate that 'till you get addicted. I don't think I'll ever use the patches; I'd probably feel ill having a constant stream of nicotine going into me. I'd rather just get a mild fix (like from gum) without the smoking. I've decided to start meditating again; really concentrate on controlling all my physical and mental processes. Quote:

Yep, they still use nicotine in the gum GrimReefer, but the point is that somewhere around half the addiction is the actual action of smoking. Smoking really reinforces the habbit, and it helps that I hate chewing gum anyway. Mentis_Imperiosus: I think you mistook my thread for being about weed. heh, I've smoked weed for 4 years and it's always 100% easy for me to quit any time (I often goes months without). Maybe weed's addictive for some, but definately not for me; not even a little. Quote:

I can't do that Koonu, due to my problem with weed increasing my pain levels 5 fold. Burried in my first post: Quote: |

Just an FYI..the beauty of the patch is that you have NO behavior associated with the addiction..with the gum you are still acting to counteract the craving..you simply forget about wanting to smoke with the patch..I'm a cold turkey kind of guy myself..I just head straight into the battle...grrr..lol..anyway it doesn't matter at all to me...just thought I'd add some insight..good luck..

I've never really thought about quitting smoking cigarettes. I've been smoking for almost 6 years now, and I haven't even thought about stopping really.
If you really want to quit smoking cigarettes, you have to be in the right mind-set. Same as quitting anything. It's all in the mind mostly, but with cigarettes there is a physical addiction. It will be hard to overcome, but you can do it if you really set your mind to it. |

Smoked for 10 years. Quit cold turkey no problem, been tobacco free 18 months now.
The secret is....remember you have a budget and cigarettes and tobacco do not factor in at all. DONT BUY.
Easier said than done? Not really, you just get over the first 2 or 3 weeks of cravings then ta da you no longer really want tobacco and you no longer seem to even like the smell of it after a few months.

Smoked for a while. Never more than a pack a day though, and if it got close to that it was only for a few months that it was close to a pack a day.
Quit about 2 years ago, relapsed a few times, lol, but ultimately have stopped. Cravings are always still there. Its just mind over matter. The smell is what really drives me away.

Just wondering JDR; does a pack a day entail 20 cigs or 10 cigs? Half the brands seem to have one or the other.

I used to smoke cigs, I quit aug 98 for 5 years. Started up again, quit again, started and i am currently cig smoke free. I used a combination of nic. patch, regular gum and will power. The physical addiction is gone in 3 days after that it's just your mind you'll be fighting. Cig smoke is the most dangerous substance that is legal in the world. The best christmas present you could give yourself is quitin smoking cigs. Your lungs and heart will thank you for it.

I smoked kamel reds at a pack a day for 8 out of the 10 years I smoked. The morning of November 4th 2006 I stopped smoking and will never smoke again. I loved smoking but hated what it did to my health so quiting was a mind game I was playing with myself because I really did not want to stop so I would 'quit' smoking off and on. What truly allowed me think about my habit and what I was doing was N,N-dimethyltryptamine. I was experimenting with it after I did a bunch of extractions. So I was regularly smoking it for a couple months. The way I think and view life has completely changed. Nothing magical, just refreshed and new.

My girl and I had just quit smoking before Christmas and I'm happy to say, I'm still off the ciggs. I won't lie though, I want one fairly often. The cravings fade quicker and quicker.
