There are a number of different kinds but something to look for is a scale that can be calibrated. Most can not. The ones that can usually come with a calibration weight. I have an AXE that I really like. It can be calibrated. |

Another thing to look for is multiple readings: grams, etc. Also a blacklight on the read out is sweet if your in your car.
The one I have comes with a plastic bowl that fits on the top like this one: http://www.okpocketscale.com/images/Apollo-5000.jpg |

Stoner Buck$$: 11.45 | Re: what should i look for in a scale? It all depends on your preference. I personally started with some triple beams that we stole from the science dept at high school. I loved those things.
But I switched to digi's a long time ago. How much it can weigh (high and low) is very important to me. Sometimes I like to think of myself as a chemist and experiment with some crazy powder that makes you trip. I weigh that shit out in carats. So it has to do both. |

I own a couple of scales. One is a US Balance scale, called US Magnum 500g x 0.1g. Not an expert here, but basically I believe this scale will measure up to 500 grams, in 0.1 increments. Works fine. The top pops off and you can use it to hold what ever while you weigh it. Think it cost around $22. btw, it comes with a calibration weight so you can calibrate the scale, if needed.
Second scale is a Palmscale 7.0. This scale only weighs up to 200 grams in increments of 0.01. So it will weigh less, but will show the results in smaller measurements, .01 vs .1 (hope that makes sense to somebody, lol).
The Palmscale cost around $45 and it also comes with a calibration weight so you can calibrate the scale, if needed. Both scales will measure in various modes, i.e., gr, oz, ct, etc. Both scales are also pretty small, almost pocket size.
I personally like the Palmscale best. Feels really well made. They both work well, don't think you would go wrong with either one, IMO.
Hope that helps.

I'll throw in another good word for the PlamScale. A friend of mine has one and it really does feel nice. I believe you can get them in rechargeable as well.

I have a Palmscale 6.0 which I like very much. It is rechargable like Osprey said. It came with two trays that fit on the scale. It came with calibration weights and has different modes such as Grams, Ounces, Carats, Troy Ounces, and Pennyweight. It came with a protective shealth and has built in 'Gem Tweezers and Findings Scoop."
All that for just $110! The only thing I did not like about my Palmscale was its rechargable and the outlet was European style and I live in the Us. So I had to find an adaptor to fit my charge station. Luckly I did.
