Stoner Buck$$: 1,067.89 My Mood : | Anti Shell Demo Shropshire A lovely colourful protest took over a local Shell station in the rural west midlands (uk) last weekend. The action included D-locking the pumps, they set up a catering table of samosas, pasties, tea and coffee, people held up banners and a few other people handed out leaflets to vehicles and townsfolk passing by.

Stoner Buck$$: 1,067.89 My Mood : | Brockovich throws weight behind Shell to Sea cause
By Enda Feeney
ERIN Brockovich, the campaigner immortalised in an Oscar-winning film, yesterday urged oil giant Shell to reroute its controversial gas pipeline In the west of Ireland.
The former legal clerk, who famously took on a massive power company accused of toxic leaks, gave her whole-hearted support to the campaigners opposing the development in north Co. Mayo.
Miss Brockovich said that the pipeline must be relocated if it would affect local residents' health or property, a claim which is denied by Shell.
She said: 'There is no compromise when it comes to health and safety and Shell should respect that.'
Miss Brockovich, who was portrayed by actress Julia Roberts in the 2000 hit movie, won a multi-million dollar legal battle against energy firm PG & E for families affected by contaminated water in a Californian town.
Miss Brockovich said she believed that a compromise could be reached between campaigners and Shell after discussing the matter with Irish Environment Minister and Green Party leader John Gormley.
The Shell to Sea demonstrators oppose attempts to lay a pipeline which will transport untreated and odourless gas from the Corrib gas field to an inland refinery because of health and environmental fears.
Miss Brockovich said: 'I completely understand their concerns.
'I deal with issues in theUnited States where pipelines have been put in, they've leaked and created health problems.
She added: 'That is always a family's concern, and they should be concerned and I'm glad that they are.'
Miss Brockovich is in Dublin to speak about the benefits of eating organic food. Saturday, September 20, 2008

Stoner Buck$$: 1,067.89 My Mood : | Facebook deletes Shell to Sea page Shell to Sea activists responded with puzzlement yesterday to the deletion of the campaign's page on the popular social networking site Facebook. The Facebook page was used to inform supporters of events, to post press releases, and to provide a platform for those who want to show their support for the Shell to Sea campaign.
Attempts by activists to contact Facebook and find out why the page had been deleted were unsuccessful.
Shell to Sea spokesman Terence Conway said: "Alternative forms of media like Facebook, YouTube, and Indymedia are very important for keeping people informed what is happening regarding Shell's attempt to foist a production pipeline and refinery on the people of County Mayo. Important aspects of the issue, such as the government's giveaway terms for Ireland's natural resources, are often left out of reports in newspapers, radio and television; and in reporting the campaign, the mainstream media are often less than impartial. Using internet sites such as Facebook has allowed people to hear our side of the story."
Ironically, Fianna Fáil Minister Mary Coughlan announced yesterday that Facebook intend to site their European office in Dublin. It was Minister Coughlan who recently signed consents for Shell to work on the "Special Area of Conservation" at Glengad.

Stoner Buck$$: 1,067.89 My Mood : | Veteran Shell to Sea protestor jailed tonight
Shell to Sea protestor Maura Harrington has been jailed today.
She appeared before Belmullet District Court charged with assaulting a member of the Garda Síochána on Mc Grath's Pier in Poll a Tómáis in north Co Mayo on 11 June 2007.
She was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of €1,000 and another €1,000 to the garda benevolent fund.
Harrington was also found guilty of another public order offence on a separate date and ordered to keep the peace for 12 months.
Harrington refused to sign the bond and was therefore found to be in contempt of court.
Judge Mary Devins jailed her for 28 days for the garda assault, and a further two days for being in contempt of court, to run concurrently.
Judge Devins also recommended that Ms Harrington should get a psychiatric assessment. RTÉ News: Shell to Sea protestor jailed
With weather conditions improving, work is due to resume any day now at Glengad.... they think if they chop off the head the body will die... Not A Fucking Chance !!!

Stoner Buck$$: 1,067.89 My Mood : | Re: SHELL To SEA - Rossport, Co.Mayo, Eire. PRESS & PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM CORK SHELL TO SEA
12th March 12, 2009.
The Cork branch of the Shell to Sea campaign makes clear its opposition to and dismay at the miscarriage of justice perpetrated upon our fellow campaigner Maura Harrington in Belmullet District Court yesterday by Judge Mary Devins. Maura has been jailed for 28 days for an alleged assault on a member of An Garda Siochana that never happened. She was not permitted by Judge Devins to present video evidence of the time and place the Gardai allege this assault took place which would support her defence. Judge Mary Devins is the wife of Fianna Fail minister for state Jimmy Devins, and the government of which he is a member stands fully in support of Shell and the forcing through of the Corrib Gas project upon the resisting people of Erris, Co. Mayo.
As this perversion of justice was carried out another Shell to Sea campaigner, Mr. Niall Harnett, was violently attacked by several members of An Garda Siochana in the courtroom itself and on its precincts. As a result, Mr. Harnett had to have an ambulance called to attend to the injuries inflicted on him and to take him to hospital. This has been the common experience of Erris residents and their fellow-campaigners in Shell to Sea at the hands of Shell and An Garda Siochana for some time now.
It is well worth recalling the events of the day the Gardai allege this assault took place. On the 11th of June 2007 at Pullathomas, Co. Mayo, a very large contingent of uniformed Gardai and several armed detectives, all led by Supt. Joe Gannon, used a JCB to force their passage through private lands without express permission from the landowner, in order to place on a pier a portacabin and other equipment for one of Shell’s subcontractors. Over a dozen protestors were seriously injured by the violent actions of the Gardai that evening, yet no Garda has ever had to face charges for their actions, nor is there any likelihood that such might happen in the future. The owner of the land was later subjected to an intimidation campaign by several of the gardaí involved in the pier incident, which had a severe effect on his health.
Cork Shell to Sea spokesperson Ray Hanrahan said, “This jailing is just the latest injustice meted out by the Irish government and the big oil corporations on the ordinary people of Erris, who have been resisting the imposition of this dangerous pipeline and refinery on their community and on the pristine environment of north-west Co. Mayo. This brave community of which Maura is a part has stood in the way of the greatest theft from the Irish people ever concocted by greedy business interests and corrupt politicians – the complete theft of the oil and gas riches off our shores. There may be anything up to €500 billion or more of energy resources out there, and both Shell and Ireland’s political establishment are determined that none of this bounty will ever benefit the Irish people.”
Cork Shell to Sea asks for people everywhere to express their solidarity with Maura while she is imprisoned by those who would rob us all of the resources that could benefit Ireland and positively transform our society for generations to come. You can send messages of support to Maura Harrington, Dochas Centre, Mountjoy Prison, North Circular Road, Dublin 7, or join in any of the many public actions in her support that will be happening over the coming days and weeks. We also urge people to get involved in the Shell to Sea campaign, especially now in advance of Shell’s next attempt to force their pipeline through Glengad and Rossport, which is expected very soon. We also urge all people to find out the facts about Shell in Co. Mayo and the Great Gas Robbery, with suggested web-links: SHELL TO SEA: The West's Awake! Mayo / - Features - Indymedia Ireland STATEMENT ENDS HARRINGTON’S JAILING IS HYPOCRISY SAY DUBLIN SHELL TO SEA
Dublin Shell to Sea are holding a solidarity protest with jailed teacher Maura Harrington this Saturday opposite the GPO at 2pm. Ms Harrington was sent to Mountjoy prison for 26 days for allegedly assaulting a Garda in an incident last summer.
"We want to highlight the hypocrisy involved in Ms Harrington’s jailing" commented Dublin Shell to Sea spokesperson Caoimhe Kearns, "Throughout the conflict surrounding Shell’s discredited refinery at Bellanaboy the Gardaí have acted in a most unprofessional manner and with impunity for their actions; they have battened, assaulted and threatened protesters. Instead of serving the people of Ireland they are providing effective private security for Shell."
She further added "At this time of economic recession when the government is having a hard time balancing the budget books it is timely to remember that members of Finna Fáil, the party currently in government were responsible for effectively giving away our oil and gas to the oil companies for nothing. The Corrib Gas field is estimated to be worth at least 9.5 billion. It is money we could do with now for funding cervical cancer vaccines for young women or special needs teachers for out schools." PRESS STATEMENT - Pobal Chill Chomain - 13th March 2009
Jailing of Corrib opponents
Pobal Chill Chomain supports all efforts to resolve the ongoing Corrib gas controversy peacefully, through agreement and dialogue with the affected community of Kilcommon Parish, but our community has been subjected to a long and sustained campaign of corporate policing and judicial bullying by the Irish authorities, who are acting solely on behalf of the oil companies involved in the Corrib project.
This week's jailing of yet another opponent of the Shell/Statoil/Marathon scheme, Maura Harrington, is clearly a step in the wrong direction, and will only lead to yet more distress for the people of Erris. Even worse, the State's continued response to the people's legitimate grievances will only serve to escalate an already fraught situation, and prolong the suffering for all concerned.
With Shell, Statoil and Marathon planning a further assault on the local area in the coming weeks and months an agreed solution is needed now more than ever, before the situation deteriorates into a dangerous repeat of the events of last summer.
The Corrib gas project is the sole cause of the troubles in our community, and the State's heavy-handed response is directly responsible for the incarceration of Maura Harrington, who has also suffered an unjust attack on her character by sentencing judge Mary Devins.
If the recent past has taught us nothing else, it is that people are fighting for their most basic rights to be upheld, and that jailing opponents of Corrib simply for their opposition will never be the answer. ENDS

Stoner Buck$$: 1,067.89 My Mood : | URGENT CALL OUT Remove Shell's Illegal Fences - National Day of Action - CALL OUT - Indymedia Ireland Saturday 9th May, 2009 at 6pm - Day of Action - Support Needed to Remove Shell Fences from Glengad.
This is a Call Out from the united community of Erris Co Mayo to all our national and international supporters, asking you to come to Glengad this coming Saturday 9th May at 6pm in the evening, on a Day of Action to help us remove Shell's illegal fences from the area.
As you know, Shell returned to Glengad with fences and machinery on Wednesday 22nd April, with force and violence. Since then there have been a number of attempts at removing the fences and stopping the work, with a mixture of failure and success.
As you can see from the photos and footage below, the will is clearly there to fight Shell, in spite of the fact that large numbers of Shell security and Gardai have been drafted into the area. But what is also clear is that numbers are needed to achieve success. Numbers, People, Bodies. That means you. Please come.
By way of background to the current mood in Erris, let's remind ourselves of 2 key recent events.
In the early hours of Thursday 13rd April, Shell mercenaries viciously attacked Willie Corduff within the confines of the Shell compound.
On Thursday 30th April at a community meeting with Ministers Eamon Ryan and Eamon O'Cuiv, people realised that trying to 'talk' to these guys was a fruitless exercise. There were calls from all corners of the community for civil disobedience, the physical stopping of the project and the taking of the 'law into our own hands', when the ministers refused to invite Shell to pull back to allow breathing space to resolve the conflict.
This is serious stuff. The mood in Erris now is that people are willing to pay any price to Stop Shell, and to take action accordingly.
But we need support, in numbers, to achieve the critical mass of people required to be effective. To be effective in pulling down Shell fences in order to remove them.
This protest is about taking direct action against the Shell machine and removing it from Glengad.
The pictures and footage included in this article, which show local people attempting to remove fences today, demonstrate that Action has begun in earnest this Spring and will continue in the coming weeks and months. But it's going to be a battle, when faced, like today, with strong fences and large numbers of Shell security and Gardai. A similar attempt was made last Friday by members of the local community which included Pobal Le Cheile, Pobal Cill Chomain, the Rossport Solidarity Camp and Shell to Sea, but numbers were limited. All groups agreed, at a meeting on the ground, that a National Day of Action next Saturday 9th May was required to build momentum. That is why local people are calling for support, in numbers, to build strength against the show of force against us.
The weather is improving steadily and The Rossport Solidarity Camp is being rebuilt near the shore. People are welcome to come and stay at the camp or the camp house. Phone 085 1141170 or email rossportsolidaritycamp (at) gmail (dot) com
Join us in taking action against Shell. Don't come empty-handed. Please spread the word amongst your friends, groups and networks.
See you in Glengad.

Stoner Buck$$: 1,067.89 My Mood : | Re: SHELL To SEA - Rossport, Co.Mayo, Eire. SHELL TO SEA: The West's Awake!
STATEMENT FROM THE REVEREND DESMOND M TUTU
Archbishop of Cape Town
11 May 2009
As patron of the justice and peace organisation Afri, a disturbing development in the ongoing resource conflict in Erris, County Mayo, has been brought to my attention.
A peaceful protestor, Goldman International Environmental Award Winner Mr. Willie Corduff has been physically attacked, under cover of darkness, by the agents of a multinational corporation, resulting in his being hospitalised and left severely hurt and traumatised.
I am aware that the conflict centres around attempts by a consortium comprised of Shell, Statoil and Marathon to bring raw gas ashore in Erris, by means of a high-pressure pipeline running through the community, to a processing plant at Ballinaboy.
This is opposed by local people, particularly in the parish of Kilcommon where the project is based, because of fears for their health and safety (including possible contamination of their drinking water).
A compromise proposed by three members of the Catholic clergy and supported by a majority of people in the locality, would have seen an onshore processing plant located in an unpopulated area away from the community's water supply, eliminating the need for high pressure pipelines.
This proposed compromise has, unfortunately, been rejected by Shell and the lrish government.
The strength of feeling in the community regarding this issue is illustrated by the fact that five people, who became known as the Rossport 5, spent 94 days in prison for their non-violent opposition to the project going ahead in its current form. Mr. Corduff, one of the Rossport 5, went on to win the prestigious Goldman international environmental award, known as the Green Nobel Prize, in 2005.
It is in regard to the attack on Mr. Corduff that I particularly wish to make my concerns known. Mr. Corduff is a small farmer who has lived all his life and raised his family in this area. His only interest and motivation is the protection of his family and the welfare of his community. His opposition to the gas project has always been entirety peacefuI and non-violent.
