Stoner Buck$$: 163.32 | is music dying?
i love being high and listen to music, its like taking a vacation into the land of awesome! When you cant get a ride and got no money for a taxi, if I got music and a dooby , even if the walk is long you'll appreciate the shit out of it. ok i guess you know where im going with this..
anyways this post is just my opinion and if someone has something to say about it, im defineatly open for suggestions.
Music is selling out in almost every genre except maybe heavy metal, they stay true to themselves. And then there is techno... I dont know about you guys but as a stoner i dont think its music that can be appreciated unlike the other genre's from heavy metal and rock to jazz and country. I dont listen to all of these genres of music but i see what there is to be appreciated in them. Alot of epic rappers from oldschool to gangsta rap, what makes them so good is not this sell out bullshit like 50 cent's new stuff. What distinguishes the good from bad rappers is their flow and their lyrics.
I dont listen to alot of rap but i know why people like it. When it comes to rock, i grew up in the 90s so the rock i grew up with was stuff like ; rage against the machine, nirvana, pearl jam , alice in chains and so on. The more i look for good rock music the further i end up on bands further back in time to ZZ top, acdc, led zeppelin or johnny cash. The rock that i hear on the radio that is new ( a.k.a. mainstream) in my opinion sucks, or its just too different from the oldschool rock. If anyone has suggestions for new rock bands that dont suck, please leave a comment
anyhow, this was the first time i used internet forums and i just smoked a few heads from the bong and was thinking about all that so i thought what better place is there on this forum. I hope it makes any sense but if it did make sense to you and you have something to add, please do.
peace out and puff puff pass....

The best thing to do, i've found, would probably focus on sounds that are pleasing to the ears or on a scaled shred that'll blow your mind rather then who's letting their songs on the radio. Don't let the amount of money a band is making off sales dictate whether or not you enjoy listening to them.
Selling out is what the music industry is about. Some bands do it, some don't. All that shows is a separation in personal beliefs.
I bet at least half of your favorite bands got into the music industry with the thought of blowing up into super stars in mind.
And as for rap.
98% of it is terrible but if you look hard enough you can find rappers like Immortal Technique, Sage francis, Sole, P.O.S. and the like who sing about more meaningful things then how many chains they bought with the money you gave them for terrible songs.

I dont know as far as other genres but as far as mainstream rap goes, it started dying the night Pac got shot and it wheezed its last breath with the commercial sucess of clowns like 50 Cent and Souljah Boy. Been dead for years.
as boon pointed out though, underground rap is alive and well.

there are plenty of genres that havent sold out, or at least not all the bands. most electronica, many jam bands (but not all), and countless ska and punk bands...but unfortunately punk has been taken over by pseudo-punks that are actually just into lame emo FUCK THAT. but there are alot of small bands that are INCREDIBLE, you just need to know where to look.
the country though as a whole has sold out. i live in southern NH and there is a huge, almost cult like ska scene around here and its been growing for years. you would never hear about ska though on any mainstream media source. the same is true for alot of small festival bands. i want to see one original non-formulamatic band, preferably that dables in psychedlics which it seems the only drugs popular stars do now are hard drugs that they keep secret, that can make it big. i'm not a huge metal fan, but i could see this happening with metal i suppose

music isn't dying, but it is changing. In my opinion, you will hear little to no good music on the radio (try and get local college radio, if you have it--I find student-run stationss are much more likely to play good/underground shit).
Check out the internet. there are a lot of good musicians out there that distribute their stuff through the internet (usually at pretty low cost, too).
But you'll have a hard time finding any modern music worth a damn being distributed by a major record label.

That's why I don't listen to the radio anymore. Most music today sucks.
To find good music I usually just ask my friends. They know what I like to listen to, and a lot of them and I listen to the same kind of stuff. Local bands can be good too, and local shows can be really cheap if they aren't known. If you live near a college you can try to go to shows on campus, it gives you a good chance to find local bands. Go to concerts to see headlining bands you like too, especially if you don't know the opening bands. That's part of how I found my newest musical obsession. The band opened at a show that a friend of mine went to, and he told me about them.
I find online radio stations are good too, they're more specific than regular radio. If you don't have it already you can download iTunes and listen to free radio stations through that.

Music will be alive and well after we're all long gone...With so many different types of music it's very close minded to say one type is better than another...I,as a personal preference, prefer not to listen to music that's degrading or hateful towards others...

It's because musicians aren't making the music.. businessmen are..

i think one of the biggest problems with music, and this goes for tv shows and movies too, is that they are just running out of ideas. Sure, there is always new songs you can right but rock and roll for example can't go on being original (lead guitar, rhythm guitar with an easy chord progession) for ever. it'll probably take a while, but at some point we will run out of new music unless it gets so complex only a computer can make it.
thats what alot of musicians thought when they heard jimi hendrix for the first time. i dont see this happening any time soon, but there are only so many combinations of notes, effects, instruments, and beats that can be used; especially if a band is trying to fit into a specific "genre"
