I used to be a pretty big metal head. Had all the latest underground metal releases, as well as the classics. Wore the band shirts everyday (I still rock a Mastodon shirt though), all I listened to was metal. Then I came across Mastodon and started getting more progressive with my metal, then it turned into basically listening to whatever. I like to keep my options open. Now I'm into techno, rap, metal, rock, prog, classical, whatever's good. To this day though, I still have all my metal posters up and my favourite CDs are still Rust in Peace by Megadeth and Leviathan by Mastodon. And no matter how long I listen to rap for, if I hear one good metal song, the beast within me wakes. Meshuggah is good for that.
PS. I don't care what you say, no rap, rock, prog or whatever concert will ever be better than a real heavy metal concert. Nothing like punching someone in the face and knowing that they understand the circumstances of the mosh pit.
PPS. When I talk about metal, I don't mean any of that gay emo shit like BFMV or Trivium either. I mean like, fucking metal.

70's-early 80's - Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Mid 80's-mid 90s - Megadeth, Metallicrap (Good music, hate the drummer and vocalist,) Alice in Chains, Ozzy Ozzbourne w/ Randy or Zakk, Lamb of God, Slayer, Anthrax, Steve Vai, too many to list.
Anything afterwards, with VERY FEW exceptions, is utter BS. Killswitch Engage, Dimmu Borgir, God Forbid are examples of the exceptions.
