Good Stoner Rock

Thrash is thrash and stoner rock is stoner rock. They both appeal to stoners, but Evile definitely have no business being mentioned in this thread.

Wow... I can't believe the lack of stoner rock bands in this thread. Of course, I see a good majority of the 70's "metal" bands as the actual forefront of stoner rock and and the foundation of what eventually became metal. I'll leave those out for the moment unless people want some recommendations. I feel the stoner genre is a pretty much seperate sub-genre of rock than metal, but without a doubt are intrinsically linked in their fanbase. Thus I don't complain too much when people say that a stoner band is metal, though in a lot of cases the difference to people between "stoner rock" and "stoner metal" is only the vocals (and thats just plain silly because I've heard just about every vocal style for nearly every style of rock/metal).

Bands I recommend from my personal library:

Bible of the Devil
Bongzilla (stoner riffs with harsh vox, fun shit)
Cathedral (some of their stuff is traditional to more extreme doom)

Earthride (some of their material is traditional doom)
Goatsnake (ESSENTIAL!!!!)
Goblin Cock
High on Fire (though they are a bit more unique)
Kyuss (essential)
Masters of Reality (loosely)
Monster Magnet
Orange Goblin (early stuff more traditional doomy)
Orodruin (heavy stoner rock from Rochester, NY check 'em out)
Pentagram
Bedemon (obscure 70's "doom" ahead of its time, killer stoner stuff)

Sleep (um... Yeah, purely essential, I also recommend Asbestosdeath which is pre-Sleep)

Yeah, I left out Eyehategod because they are sludge, but awesome none the less (Take As Needed for Pain is currently in my vehicle CD player) and Saint Vitus I actually don't listen to that often (I have 160 gigs of music because of my radio shows so I have a ton of shit too).

what about butthole surfers? they got some weird music, but it is intense. listen to "They Came In" or "Bong Song" or "Friend with Weed". all of their songs are really good, but one time listening to bong song while stoned on the high way i was practically trippin. crazy shit really. almost crashed

Good stuff, they started out a punk band then became more of an alt. rock (I'm sure there is a better name for it than that, but that is not my area of expertise) band.

saint vitus is like 1 of my favorite doom bands.ice monkey is an awesome song

I'm happy to see that The Mars Volta was mentioned, but it seems to me that perhaps the ultimate music to listen to while stoned has been missed:

RADIOHEAD

Listen to the album OK Computer (especially the songs "Paranoid Android" and "Exit Music for a Film") while you're baked, and tell me it doesn't blow your mind.

Kid A is awesome, but for some reason, OK Computer is the perfect music for when you're high, IMO. You get so lost in it...it's ridiculous. AMAZING even.
