What recording software/soundcard do you use. I need help.

I need help getting started so I can record, then upload music files to website. Is there anyone, or 2 or 3 among you that can do some Q & A on the subject?

What is the best type file to use? wav? mp3?

I have mixer, low impedance mics, effects... I am old school & do not understand how soundcards work.

I own a Dell Optiplex GX240, with a built in sound card. I cannot figure out how to get signal from mic/guitar/mixer...etc to sound coming from speakers on computer...

I have Kristal, and Audacity software loaded, but don't understand how to configure system to get signal from mic/line

I shouldn't need too much of your time, and I can download software, if need be. Any help will be appreciated, lw. thanks, I am dying to get some tracks down. peace

Hey Lw how u doing man, so u wanna record a few tracks and don´t wanna compromise quality?Ok, but 1st let me ask u some questions.

1 - What gear do u have (mixer, pc specs, guitar, guitar pedals, amps do u have keyboards etc) ?
2 - Since u choose to record tracks on the pc are u considering the use of software synths (to build midi tracks for drums, bass or any other sound) or just the pc as an interface?
3 - Finally if u do decide to get a soundcard, whats your budget? (no, built in soundcards or media soundcards like soundblaster dont get the job done and propper recording cards aint that expensive)
