It matters. Using the wrong lamp with the ballast will likely kill the lamp. However it could also damage your ballast, which would be even more expensive. There are digital and magnetic ballasts designed to work with either lamp. The digital are usually self switching and the magnetic should have an on board switch or an indication for rewiring.
