How far from plant?

I have 2 600watt lights with glass shield, how far from plants should they be.

I did some checking around, and best advice i could find was this.

"Start at eighteen inches and move it down a few inches a day until it is within a foot of the canopy. The plants will grow up to meet the light and you don't want them to stretch too much."

You might also find this link helpful. It has a calculator to help you determine exactly how far they should be.

What kind of lights are they? What kind of ventilation do you have?

600 watt hps with glass cover. exhaust fan above lights but not hooked up with lights

That's a really nice fixture. Why not hook it to the ventilation system? You would be able to have your lights closer to the plants if you were pulling some of the heat load out, directly from the light and surrounding material.

i have 2 430's hung together to cover a 5 x 3' area and i keep them appx 14-16" above the top leaves and when i pull out the 1K's i raise em up to 2-2.5 feet...both have glass enclosures with exhaust hose sucking out the heat thru a dayton 135 fan so keep that in mind too.
a general rule of thumb is using the back of your hand place it directly under the bulb and when it begins to feel uncomfortable stop and place the light so the bulb is half a foot below that spot...then checking daily to be sure tops are ok and distance is being kept constant as they grow (and some days they can grow extra fast!)...
