Hey guys!
so Im looking into getting a good grow light. I have been doing alot of reading and some people seem to think for growing 10 or so small plants i would need a 1000watt light but ive seen setups with the same number of plants growing nicely with a 200watt light. so which one is it?!?!
secondly i was wondering what you thought about the style of light. I was thinking it would be best to get the SunSystem 5. Its an HID that has both MH and HPS. is that the way to go? what do you guys use MH or HPS?
thanks friends,
The Lorax

The Lorax | Hi Lorax
Here is a general rule of thumb on the matching the light with the growing area.
growing area- light
3' x 3' = 400 watt
4' x 4' = 600 watt
5' x 5' = 1000 watt

Alot depends on your system.. Is it 2 rooms Veg/Flower, or are you gonna do 1 room and use the same light 4 veg and flower? If you do 1 batch at a time, that dual light will work well. I always used a 2 room/space system with Fluoros or a small mh on the vegative side, and a HPS to Flower. I had a 600 hps for the flower room and it worked great.. Remember the bigger the light, or a dual light will start to give you heat issues if you are using a small space.. 1000hps are nice, but lots of heat output... Just a few more thoughts for you...

Oh and I forgot to mention that a 200w hps will not develop and thicken your buds very well with 10 plants, that is way too many for a 200.. You would get more yield off 2 plants under the same 200 as 10, and most likely and the 2 would be much better.. 10 would be very deprived under a 200, unless you kept them super small, then there would be little yield...

Fluorescent systems are coming in lumen for lumen over Metal Halide systems. T5 fluorescents are the light of choice for low heat growing. Get 416w of T5 and you're pushing loads of choice light for growing.

I herd that blue rays promote bud growth and red promote stem growth. and dont MH give off more blue rays? i guess i would like to know the pros and cons of MH and HPS.
I was planing on growing with one room.

thanks for the help! | Blue light is for vegetative growth (leaves, stems)
Red is for budding/flowering.
