Which would you choose for about the same money a 250w with convertable digital ballist for HPS and MH or a 400w HPS only light?

It will go in a closet the is 6'x3'x8' (l x w x h). The garden is for personal use only and the gardener would prefer not to cut holes in the ceiling and walls to vent.

The walls will be covered in mylar and there are 3 x 26w clf's and one 65w clf work light in there right now providing light for seedlings. The 65w work light is really cool and is hanging presently, but it will be placed standing up later to penetrate the underside of the plants when they are taller and a second one will likely be purchased to perform the same function.

Could I get away with a 400w MH/HPS without cutting holes in the walls or ceilings for venting hot air?

It would really depend on the outside conditions as well as the inside conditions do you know what your grow space temp and humidity are at lights on lights off remember you really don't want the temp to get above 80f and 50%-60% rh

My room dimension is 6foof long, 4 foot 2 inches wide and 7 foot 9 high and am growing with 400 HPS, can maintain 80 degrees day with 68 night using light alone as heat source WITH ventilation. Your closet is 2 feet longer than my veg closet, that maintains 78 degrees with flourescent lighting only. I use the lights as a heat source in my house. Where I exhaust is not a problem nor is the smell of the grow, another consideration in your closet.

Might be a touch on the hot side without air intake and exhaust

This is a first time grow in a rental property, so physical modification to the closet must be minimal. The heat issue will probably dictate a 250w light. Hopefully by next spring the garden can be moved onto private property with the lessons learned and knowledge gained applied to a gardened powered by a 600w hps/mh light.

I think Christmas money will be applied to a nice little carbon scrubber.

fyi, even a 250w light a 6'x3'x8' space produces a lot of heat. A space that once stayed at 73-78 deg F and 50%-60% RH unvented with cfl's goes to mid 80's deg F and 50%-70% RH with the door partially opened. If the door is closed several hours then the closet go up to 93 deg F and 75% RH.

just an idea, but have you considered removing the current closet door and replacing it w/one that you can modify for intake/exhaust and then simply putting the old one back on before you move,or before any inspection or whatever?
you could exhaust at the top and intake at the bottom, it might not be perfect, but I bet it would be acceptable.

Excellent idea. I wish I had thought of that before buying the light. That is so brilliant and seems like it should have been obvious (but so are most brilliant ideas).

With the temps and RH what they are with the 250w in place, I may still want to do this.

(I have been in the house for 3yrs and not one inspection; Gawd, why did I have to burn all my good brain cells out before starting this adventure?)
