It is pretty much hands down in favor of a HPS lamp on for 12 and off for 12 as being the optimal indoor lighting. I personally think that can be improved on by simply adding a lightmover. If I were to add them anyways, I would put them on the same cycle as the gro lights.

i have to strongly disagree with you on the everything being tried and evaluated thing, because lighting is an ever changing and technologically evolving matter. 10 years ago they didnt have nearly the options for growlights as there are now.
oh, but a single hps is far from optimal, and that is well known. most people, given no limitations on things like money or concern about how much wattage you will be running, prefer 2 mh lights to every 1 hps light in a setup, with the three lights on a rotating doohickey. and of course, the hours you choose depends on the stage of growth the plant is in. cant have it set to 12 hours off when it isnt supposed to be flowering

tomorrow im going to be getting a new, lower wattage light downstairs, cuz right now its getting a bit cold, but i fear adding any more electronics to the room, dont want to overload it. so yeah, getting a 600w light, and im going to pick up a couple reptisun 10 lights to throw some uvb into the mix.
heres a little talk about the possible effects of uvb on the thc production in the good herb-
