Stoner Buck$$: 258.82 My Mood : | 400 Watt MH vs CFL's vs 4'x2 T5 Florescence?
Hello!
Thanks for all the input I have learned here already! My question is, What should I be using for lights right now? Ten day old Afghan Kush, my three little feminized girls. Been in 3 gal. FFOF since day 3. Feeding 1/4 strenght FFGB and FFBB since day 5 every couple days with Advanced Nute Jump Start for the roots. Running Oakton PH11 @6.8 PH.
Plants look fantastic with 3 nodes high, plus initial sprout leaves. Have lots of fresh air circulation, and CO2. Running 18/6 MH about 2' above plant with fan blowing in them. Temp is 75° @ night and 82°/85° w/lights during day. My girls are very compact, as in only 3/8-1/2" between nodes. Color looks great to me, Very green w/ no burn spots or anything like that. Do I need to use one of the other lights that I already have for a softer light to get my girls a little taller before I use 400W HM lights? I am finishing with 400W HPS as soon as the ask me for it! I am all jacked up waiting to see what come from this.
Thanks for your input!

DTT | Your off to a great start it sounds like DogTown . Couple of questions so I understand your grow:
"Running 18/6 MH about 2' above plant." Does this mean you are already running your 400 now at 2 feet above plant tops? 10 day old seedlings only need floro's.
"Have lots of fresh air circulation, and CO2." CO2 is not necessary at this age and combined with lots of fresh air seems like you would be blowing gas out the exhaust. Save your CO2 for flower.
Looking forward to watching your grow DogTown.

Thanks J_J,
Yes I am running my MH right now! My first grow, thought I had to for best performance. If not then what type of florals do I need? T5 grow florescence or CFL's How many, brand name, wattage, color, and how may for 3 plants? I will save my CO2 for flower thanks
Also should I be using any other suppliments like CalMag, Open Sesimi, or suggestions? I did add some Mexican Bat Guano into my soil when potted my girls (cross your fingers).
I will be posting some pics soon as these are really good looking plants IMPO. I am keeping a journal and a diary of nute mixes, watering schedules, and all relative info for my next journey. Not sure what flavor next time yet.
Thanks again for your input.

DDT | If your running MH now then just go with it. Only issue will be stretch, work the light down gradually. Remember the back of the hand trick, if it's too hot for your hand then it's too hot for your plants. I've had plants grow up into the hood running a 400 in veg, just watch the edges of the leaves, if they turn then your more than likely burning the plants.
CalMag is primarily used during flower. I used it as a regular part of my nute program when I ran RO water. If your running tap it probably isn't necessary. Mid flower if you see brown spots on your leaves then you need some CalMag if not then don't waste the money. Pulled my last few crops with tap water and no CalMag, no issues.
Biggest mistake I see new growers making is too over fertilize the plants. I'm not a dirt grower so I'll let the more experienced guys help you there but remember to go slow with your nutes, especially at this age.
Best off luck DDT,
jj

I will keep that in mind. I am running RO water though. I was more concerned with them not being tall enough right now! They are 16 days old since I put in rockwool, 3 1/2" tall with 5 nodes with 5 leaves on last set. Went to soil 3rd day because roots were sticking out bottom of 2" square cube. All look exactly the same.
I am being as patient as I can. Very happy so far!
Pics to come
Thanks JJ

A lot of people swear that flouros are better for vegetative growth at least while the plants are small. It's a gentler light with less heat. When budding, however, the plants will appreciate the extra light of the halide. Just a thought. There are as many opinions about this as there are stars in the sky. From what I've heard though, your heat may be a tad high. I've consistently read that 78 is the top end of the optimal temperature, and 90-100 can be dangerous or deadly. Yet again though...opinions. I've always thought that was weird though since MJ grows in hot climates too. Mother nature just knows best I guess.
