Stoner Buck$$: 294.71 | 500WATT Shop Light for Dwarf Lowryder Hey Just checking I am growing dwarf lowryder (have not rcvd seeds yet as just ordered Thurs) but I am setting up my grow room(2nd bathroom/showerstall). I am thinking about getting a 500watt Halogen Shop Light ($39.99)to supply my plant light. I am only going to be growing 2 seeds at a time as I am renting and need to keep it DL. Any advice as to this working for me?? I know I am getting the autoflowering strain but I think that the lighting stills matters?? How far to keep away from plant(20")?? Any suggestions in this would be appreciated. More info:
-Miracle Grow Soil
-2 gallon pot
- Can't think if anything I'm missing??
Also on the unemployment list/have kids/have wife(not too happy about my habit/budget.
Thanks

You want a HPS light not a halogen, a halogen will burn your babies in no time.

Best place to buy one would probably be online unless you have a hydro shop close by, you would only need a 250 or 400 watt max if growing in a small space, prices can vary.
I noticed you said your unemployed so you could go with the cheaper option of flourescent lighting, some T5 strip lights or CFLS (compact flouros i.e. energy saver bulbs)

If cfl of floros dont/wont work for you, i know home depot and menards both carry low(er) watt HPS and MH lights for the security lighting app. Both are relatively cost effective as well. I saw one while i was home on leave (100w) for under 40 dollars. Hope that helps too.

you should get better soil than miracle grow..it has time released nutrients that are not good for cannabis..get Fox Farm Ocean Forest its organic & cannabis loves it. Another thing is you might wanna start the seeds out in "keg" cups brand name solo then transplant into bigger pots. 3 gallon would be a nice size, but if 2 is all you got use them...miracle grow will only piss you off & cause you & your plants stress. Hope this helps

Stoner Buck$$: 417.92 | A word about miracle grow.
i have to agree with mike, miracle grow is about the worst thing you can do. There are to many heavy minerals in it. Also, they have a lot of compost product in it as a filler. That will invite your friend the fungal gnat. The buffers in miracle grow suck to, and can lead to toxic salt buildup. Last but not least, if you do use it, and i hope you dont, add plenty of extra perlite. Miracle grow is like a bog. Make sure you start off with a pot that promotes good drainage too. I agree with the fox farm choice. For the little extra money, it will make a world of a dif. Also, hope you have a soil ph tester, and some good nut. I prefer fox farm 3 parts. If you have any questions, hit me up.

Stoner Buck$$: 233.37 | Re: 500WATT Shop Light for Dwarf Lowryder only two seeds? taking chances there bud. if they both turn out to be male, well, then you gotta start over. if i were growing in that small space, i would only buy fem seeds. you should see sex at 3-4 weeks, then you can throw out the males and concentrate on the femmes. i agree about the miracle grow. its got ferts in it already. go with the recommended soils you see here at the forum. read the faq's to avoid making mistakes. be soooo careful, tho, TELL NO ONE, EVER. REPEAT, TELL NO ONE!!! |

Stoner Buck$$: 294.71 | Re: 500WATT Shop Light for Dwarf Lowryder Just wanted to say Thanks to everyone for not letting me f**k up! Another ?? I am practicing growing reggie seed that I had from before I am germing them on a plate w/ the paper towels and one has popped out, question is how big do they have to get before planting them in soil/and how much soil to cover them with??? Am going to use 150watt (cfl kind) flood light bulb, how far away from plant should it be? On the soil where can I buy it? Walmart, Lowes, if I can't find, what is a good substitute? Should I still get Rapid-Gro to spray when plant gets bigger? Is the organic soil have wood chips//and how would I water it? Not an organic person. I will be taking pics at each stage, just waiting for my shipment to come in, Again thanks for all ur help. P.S. First time grower-if can use terms I can get, not too hip with bud slang. |

For the fox farm, do I just use the whole bag//or do I mix with reguler plain soil? What fertilizer do I spray on leaves?

Those reviews give Bright Effects a real negative light.
For 40 bucks you could go to Walmart, pick up a couple of dome lamps and a pack of decent CFLs. fyi

Get shop lights. It's the easiest and cheapest way to get going. 10 bucks per fixture. 4ft t12 bulbs using 40 watts put off 3200 lumens each. ACE SHOP LIGHT 1233 PROMOTIONAL FLUORSCENT SHOPLIGHT 48" All hardware stores have these things. Not just ACE. Get 3 fixtures and hang them from hooks from the ceiling. If you don't want to go with an HID system or spend a bunch of money, this is the cheapest and most effective way I've found to start up a simple grow room. Should cover the bathtub area nicely too. Those 500 watt quartz halogen work lights don't give off a good amount of light for the wattage, the spectrum isn't good for growing, and they heat up like a toaster oven. Reflector bulbs don't give off much light regardless of brand, and will end up costing you more than the shop lights.
Let's compare:
Wattage, Light Output, Price,
Reflector CFL - 18 each, 1200 Lumens each, $5-$12 each, + lamp holders,
Quartz Halogen- 500 each, 5000 lumens each, $ 20-40 each and gets HOT,
48" Shop Lights - 80 each, 6400 lumens each, $11 for fixture, $4 for 2 bulbs,
I've used 3 shop lights in an effective grow. That comes out to 19200 lumens at 3000kelvin spectrum (between blue and red i.e. "normal"). They used 240 watts total and costed me a total of $45.00 plus tax. Best of all.....they produced a crop in 3.5 months. Also, you dont need the "plant/aquarium" bulbs. They cost a fortune. Just get the store brand 40 watt bulbs.
