There is the possibility to use a 400w MH and a 1000w HPS for the flowering stages. I know from, well just knowing and research and all that good stuff that the full spectrum is a better choice and if you can use both lights.

With that said, in using these two together would the HPS sodium "drown out" the smaller 400w MH?


I might turn and mount the MH sideways to the plants and play "ring around the rosy" with the girls. Im thinking that would be the best use for the light.

Good times, just wanted to cover another subject, and see if anyone else was using the combo like im considering above?!

I'd suggest hanging the lights almost next to each other if your 1000w can illuminate the garden space well by itself. That way all the plants will receive the benefit of the dual spectrum. If the 1000w can't quite cover the area effectively, then space the lights out more and move the plants every few days (more under the hps for 3 days, then more under the mh for 3 days) to even out growth. I think I've read that the correct ratio is 2:1 (HPS:MH) so what you have is great. I would put the HPS at the top and the MH sideways like what was said and rotate it.

So i just harvested my first ever indoor grow. My closet is about 4x6x8. I used 1 400w MH and 1 150w HPS sunsystems built in ballist. I sprouted 4 Hollands Hope Fem seeds (from amsterdam) and only 1 lived. Though i didnt do my h/w and left the plant in the veg state for over 60 days! it was litterally like 40 inches tall when i read about 12/12 flowering lol! as soon as i read that i ran out and cut the lights off for 24 hrs then went to 12/12. I got lucky. I harvested on day 59. From 1 plant i got over 2 ounces and made like 800$. Not bad for a first run. I learned alot. I just bought another 250w HPS sunsys. light and im going to hang it next to the other two. I plan on doing 5 er 6 plants ina few weeks. (Haze&BlueBerry). I really think having both types of light is a huge advantage. The full specturm from both (IMO) really helped save my ass on this grow. I spent about 400$ on the whole room set up and made 800$ from my first plant. Not too shabby. I cant wait to keep getting better. It took me 124 days from sprout to harvest that lil lady. This go round im hoping it will be about 90 days and lookin about 2500$ in profit! Cant wait to see how it goes.

alot of stuff i've read also said mh/hps crossed makes the sun spectrum and is best for flowering..in reality, fuck a mh for budding.. hps is all you need.. i had a 1000w hps and a 1000w mh and ended up getting rid of the mh and put another hps in for a total of two hps and no mh (for budding) and got waaayyyy better results.. just no light ive seen (in reality) that gets you as big/dense buds as hps..
all that said, if yer gonna do mh anyway, since you got one and all, i'd say yer good to go, fine..just, yer gonna wanna switch out that mh for another hps if/when you can

gotta love a good debate poopfungus. I ran one genetic line for 29 harvests and during that time I played with just about every combination of lights I had: 2 1K ballasts and a 400. I ran 1K MH 1K HPS, 2k HPS, 2k HPS & 400 MH. etc. I found that adding MH produced a better quality of bud both in smell, flavor and high. The issue was how to get an even coverage of both spectrums in the tent.

My solution was to run a dual core bulb:

HiLUX GRO HPS/MH Lamp - 1000W - HID Lamps - Worm's Way -

Bulbs are a bit on the pricey side but it's THE ONLY BULB I will run in flower as the results really are not comparable to HPS alone.

I use a automated system so I can try almost any combination.
Mh, Hps. even quartz.
The best was a 3 part system with a sun circle
Rotation always on
20 min quartz filtered
1 hr 1kw HPs
10 hrs MH 1kw
1 hr 1kw HPS
20 min quartz filtered
20+++ year average .468 GWM, grams/watts/months
Here's the reasoning the sun goes up and down
reds of the dawn and sundown
reds/some blue each end of the day
MH for the day.
This system does require a automated system, and some wiring.
One old computer running xp , relayrunner (program to use printer port free to try)
Using a computer card you can have up to 256 outputs with 8 times per.
This system can run as many lights as the system can handle.
In a few decades of running 2 failures, (computer battery died the same day as a power drop) changing battery once a year solved that problem. One non mag drive pump leaked.
The best way to start is with 4 ft full service mag ballest, and full service cool white for grow and warm white for bloom.Always change bulbs in 3 months max. !!! CPF every 3 weeks, they have a bad ballast system. In a test I got 1.4 oz off a 4/40watt bulb unit.
The best thing I can say for a new grower, is duck tape, to cover your mouth. Tell know one, no exceptions. If you can hide a cow , your system is stealth. I have watched cops check my system out a few times. cords/fans/music/ballast/water/pumps/ferts. They can even find seeds in a ice cube tray.
