low-cost ventilation options for a closet garden

i want to build a closet in my basement that will allow me to have service people/visitors around without detecting my tiny personal-needs garden. trying to keep it all reasonably priced and not get nutty on expensive equipment.

i'm thinking a closet about 50 cubic feet inside (5x5x2). will be using CFLs for both veg and flowering. how can i set up adequate ventilation that can be carbon-filtered without spending a fortune?

thanks

h

Re: low-cost ventilation options for a closet garden

Get a small little inline fan, a dryer hose, and a carbon filter. Find a place to put the exhaust(attic or something).

Re: low-cost ventilation options for a closet garden

Thats a fairly small spot. Maybe odor could be controlled by just shuting the door when there are folks around. Aside from that, if you are a DIY'er I built a carbon filter from a 5gallon bucket that works fine in a small place. Mine has a 265cfm Dayton blower that seems about perfect for high air flow.

JAG mentioned venting into the attic and that would also be a good way to go.

Re: low-cost ventilation options for a closet garden

Well, I'm planning to put it in the basement, so venting it to the attic isn't an option. The air is probably going to have to circulate back out to the basement, which is about 20x24. There is one possible option for venting out but it would put the air out at ground level between our house and the neighbor's patio. They're really nice people but would not be happy about weed growing next door & are down on it the way some health nuts are. you may know the type, more exercise is their answer to everything (anxiety, chronic pain, crappy job etc. etc.).

aaaaanyway, i'd love to know more about your 5 gallon bucket project. i'm handy but haven't done anything with fan components other than for computers. also have lots of carbon prefilters handy from the air cleaners on our living levels that i could cut down.

seeing lots of squirrel cage fans online for reasonable prices but no idea how to fit them into a grow box situation.

if i figure something out for this it might become an answer to the catbox problem too...

Re: low-cost ventilation options for a closet garden

For a room that small a fan with as little as 10cfm will be enough so any fan will work well.

There are a few DIY videos on how to make carbon filters/scrubbers on youtube, and probably other sites too.

If you make or buy a good carbon filter then it really doesn't matter where you vent the exhaust because it will be clean air.

Re: low-cost ventilation options for a closet garden

I did some searching and really never did find the exact bucket scrubber directions i followed. Try this link, DIY - Build a Carbon Scrubber For Dummies! - International Cannagraphic Magazine Forums its about the closest thing i found at that site. Its a long read but its good info, and you can sorta make some mods to make use of a bucket. I especially liked the info about the fan speed as related to carbon thickness. I do have a camera, and could snap a pic of mine if you have specific questions we cant answer. Mine is nowhere near as sophisticated as this the one in the link, but its all the same principal. Like anything else thats DIY, we have to make the situations and the tools fit together.
There is lots of other threads at that site about this subject.
