| Iowa City friends? Deadwood this evening?
Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forum, been in Iowa City for 2 years now, just finished school. I have bad anxiety, and marijuana helps me a lot. I'm a bit of a solitary person - most of my friends are through my wife. I'm looking for like-minded friendly people to be my friends.
This afternoon I am reading and writing, and this evening around 8 pm I'm going to get a beer at Deadwood, downtown. Anyone who would like to join me is welcome. I will have a black shoulder bag, and today I am wearing blue jeans and sandals, with an open white dress shirt. I look like a straight-edge asshole, but I like all sorts of people.
Making friends out of the blue is weird, so this is my proposal: a few months ago I decided that this summer I want to perform vignettes from public-domain dramas downtown Iowa City, maybe a couple scenes every other day or so at 5pm, on the ped mall. The busking troupe will be called "The Overactors." We will decide collectively on scenes we want to perform, and how they will be performed. We can invent ridiculous backstories for our characters that has nothing to do with the dramas, and try to express these backstories through our acting. Overt over-acting will give us cover to be poor performers - we will be expected to be bad! - so this way we can practice and get better without undue expectations over the course of the summer (though my wife and I are moving to Madison at the end of July, but friendships may extend across state borders!).
Also, tips and gratuities for our performances allows us to express the organizing principle behind our gathering at this forum. I could certainly use some tip money to relieve my anxiety, and perhaps my new friends will point me in the direction of assistance for my current medical needs. Despite the wonderful gay-friendly atmosphere of Iowa (for the most part, at least - there are always assholes in the world), we can't seem to get our act together to help those in need of marijuana.
Hope to see a friendly face this evening! Maybe our first scene could be Act III, sc. i from "Romeo and Juliet" - swordplay between Mercutio, Tybalt, and Romeo.
Also, if you don't want to be in the troupe, but would like to be a friend nonetheless, you are more than welcome to join me regardless!
Best,
Mike
