Silly first time questions.

Well i decided to try to grow for the first time,and i've been reading pretty much this entire site for the past week,but couldnt find answers to some basic things.

Right now i'm trying some bag seeds i got locally,while the seeds i ordered are on the way,just to see if i can get these to sprout before i waste the real seeds.

I soaked 10 of them in a glass of water,a couple cracked overnight while 2 days later 1 more did. All of these were in water for 3 whole days total,so my first question is,did leaving them in there that long ruin them off the bat?

Yesterday i went out looking for soil/lights,got three 40w 2800 lumen CFL's,and some generic potting soil. Now after planting the 3 seeds that cracked,im worried the soil won't work. There seems to be alot of sticks and shit mixed in it (honestly looks like they just dug it out of someone's backyard.) Should i keep trying with this? or just start over? I'm worried the seeds will dry out in this :\

hey man i think you should be fine just make sure that you water it around the seed not on top of it and make sure that it gets the proper nutrients like nitrogen phosphorus and potassium. i am using some miracle grow soil and it is working fine. i planted about 4 days ago and shes 3 inches tall with 4 leaves so if i were you i would just see what happens and learn from mistakes good luck man.

What soil you have doesn't really matter that much as long as it can retain enough water. You can buy all the nutrients you need for it from hesi or some other growing brand.

I've planted about 30 seeds over the last couple of years and although i've never been able to find anywhere to keep or grow them i've never had one fail to germinate just from putting it straight in the soil. Does anyone know if there are any real benefits from putting them in water first?

as sar as i know it is always wet and the moisture softens the actual seed alot more compared to soil of varied humidity as you have to keep watering it and intervals can change and the soil could dry up therefor if the moisture is constantly present there is more chance that the seed willl germinate.

Yes, you can. However, you aren't guaranteed the same product you smoked. If the grower was genuinely attempting to grow good cannabis and somehow a plant in his crop turned hermaphrodite, the resulting seeds may be more likely to do the same. In the end, I would try it anyway. All that shit aside, my first go round was bag seed, try it.

You should always check the F&Q section here .Tons of great information to be had.First let me say that it is cheap soil IMO more like mulch if you can still see sticks.The soil was hurried in the mulching process,probally at local landfill.I used Foxfarm soil,great stuff to grow with.It is a bit pricey but the quality shows up in your grow.
And your soil content does matter.If your soil was rushed to become soil chances are it may contain pest's or maybe a fungus that could just ruin your whole project.I also disagree with Miracke-Grow for herbs.If you do choose to go with it you must remeber that you need to use a bunch less than it recomends.Spend a few buck's in the garden & you get back bigger buds in your jar @ the end.
Most people's fisr time grow is bag seed,mine was.I used 2 4' flour's & 4 24" flours.(lil bit b-4 CLFS,lol) My bud came out tasting of Dr.Pepper lip smackers lip gloss from back in the day.......great bud .I hope this info has been helpful & good luck.....
