I'm a first time grower growing in my closet and let me tell you you need a hell of a lot more space than you think unless you want to do see of green growing. I've also had some scares due to parents trying to get into the closet so NEVER assume it's a place no one will look cause god dammit wherever it is it needs a lock! Height wise you ideally need at the very least 1.5 - 2 meters and in a cupboard ventilation is a big issue unless you've got loads of free time to hang around with it and keep it open. You can pick up cheap extractor fans anywhere (ebay for example) but the biggest thing to make sure is that it's silent. you're not going to need a monster for a cupboard and i've managed fine with a butchered computer fan.
Tell me if this is too basic but you'll need a good timer and try get an electronic one cause when everythings silent a mechanical timer is hella loud.
Other stuff i've found out is that pots should be 3l or more for good sturdy roots, bog standard soil is never enough and if you want huge returns 'hesi supervit' is an absolute must.
Also remember that everyone says that you should veg your plants to 20" but when they flower they can shoot right up so leave enough room or learn how to prune them.
