Heat, High Pressure Sodium

In my grow room (attic), heat is an issue. There's not enough of it.
It's about five degrees fahrenhiet outside. If I invest in a highpressure sodium light, will that generate enough heat to keep my grow room livable?
Or should I buy a 50 dollar space heater?
Money is tight. Any advice is apreciated.

Re: Heat, High Pressure Sodium

just a beginners thoughts.......

if the area is closed in, I think it would be workable
but if its just open attic, I would try to close off a part of it for the grow. You might be able to use cardboard or something like that to block some of the cold air flow.
I have a 600w HPS and it get pretty hot if the fan goes off

Re: Heat, High Pressure Sodium

so i got the light. Its pretty tight
and bright

anyway, the area 1 foot directly below it is a nice 70 degrees
but to the left a foot its about 35 degrees, but that should be fixed when I put some walls up around it

But I'm worried about the 12 hour dark cycle.
Is it possible to rig up a heater to go on only during the night and let the hps heat the room during the day?

Re: Heat, High Pressure Sodium

My only complaint with buying a heater is most suck up more than 1000w, youd have to factor in electrical costs as well. I wondered about if you did enclose an area and the fans shut off with the lights, if it were insulated well it could trap enough of the daytime temps until the lights came back on. Even more so having the plants daytime at realities night. Or where is your bathroom fan vented? Maybe let the bathroom temp air flow through the closed off area.

Re: Heat, High Pressure Sodium

I'd try somekind of heat insulation like panels and then check temperatures before going for a heater, can be a cheap option if works

Re: Heat, High Pressure Sodium

Yes you should think about insulating, maybe soam foam panels about a 1" thick.Do you have insulation between truss' or just plywood then roof. There are a good number of options when it comes to insulators now a days..

Re: Heat, High Pressure Sodium

Actually, as of today, lack of heat isn't a problem anymore. it was 54 degrees outside and a snug 75 in my attic with a space heater on low.
Enventually though, as summer approaches, I am going to have to stop growing all together because I know that I just won't be able to control the heat.
Hopefully by then I'll have made the effort worth my while and I'll have covered the $ cost with the benefit of relaxation and medication.

Re: Heat, High Pressure Sodium

lowes and home depot have a sheet (4'x8' I think) of styrofoam with a reflective surrface on one side and white on the other. It looks like it would make for good insulation. if it gets real cold then double up the walls.

If using a space heater in such a small space. you might want to keep an eye on your humidity...You don't want to burn up all the moisture. Peace

Re: Heat, High Pressure Sodium

yeah late, I put a little steamer thing in there that goes off every once in a while plus I have a couple open buckets of water near the heater so there is enough water in the air.
