if you have the will to learn, the ability to spend a little to get the proper setup from the getgo, then your growing experience can be a very fun and easy one.
some quick tips:
coat your walls with white. white paint works great, if you need to, you can pick up a black(on one side) and white(on the other) poly, and coat your walls or use that to make your own walls in the space you have, with the white part facing the plants.
set up your exhaust to be more powerful than your intake.
get a carbon scrubber- no need to be letting your neighbors know you grow
run as much lighting as you safely can.
maintain a regular watering/feeding schedule. as for food, start with the assumption that less is more. it is very easy to overfeed a youngling.
the most important tip i can give you, if you have any questions about anything, ASK!
there are folk round these parts who will be happy to offer some advice.
if youre looking for a book to pick up, i highly recommend the newest edition of jorge cervantes' book: marijuana horticulture, the indoor/outdoor medical growers bible. it has a shitton of information, and full colored pictures on nearly every page. it also has a nice detailed description of all of the nutrient deficiencies/toxicities

Just like a Stoner to recommend a book full of COLOR WEED PICS!
Reading everything you can find will make your trip worthwhile.....overgrow.com which is long gone needs to be replaced...it was a grower bible....
Good luck and whatever, have fun...

Wow, that's really helpful! I'm thinking about beginning to grow, and I'm trying to figure out if I can even afford to get all the very basic equipment that I wound need to do some minimal beginner's growing; and once I am sure of what I am doing, I would move up a notch... I'm definitely going to have to pick up that book next time I am out shopping. Although, I don't know if Barnes and Noble just carries that sort of thing on their shelves... XD
