Do you think an attic would be too hot for a grow(1 or 2 plants)? Even if I put a fan up there? I live in Chicago.

Otherwise, you can rig a window air conditioner to cool a space. It doesn't have to be in a window. Just frame up a little room near your exhaust window/hole/vent and build your a/c unit into the wall of your little growroom. It will probably cost a shitload in electricity, but you can do it. Monitoring the temperature will be crucial. You might want to have the lights turn off for a few hours during the hottest part of the day. Definitely flower at night! The lights running during the day will be the main problem.

I'm setting up a large cardboard box with aluminum foil and two computer fans to a vent leading outside. How exactly can i monitor the temp? Electricity isn't a problem. This is my first grow so any tips/ advice would be great. I'm going to blaze so leave me comments for when i get back!

Stoner Buck$$: 389.87 | Re: attic grow If you can get some kind of rigid cabinet, it would be better than a cardboard box. The plants will release moisture and eventually your cardboard box may collapse. That could burn your house down if you have a hot enough light sitting on a combustible material.
See if you can find an old kitchen cabinet or something that you can rig up with fans. Computer fans might do it.
They sell digital temperature monitor things in gardening sections of wal-marts and stuff. Some have a probe on a cord that you can put outside so you can see what the temp is inside and out. You could rig that up inside/outside your box. The one I had had a function that would record the peak temperature reached during the day.

It even has the mounts for the fans already!!!
Either spray paint it flat white inside or line it with foil. Have you wired the fans so they just plug in to an outlet?
What kind of light do you have available?

If your going to grow in a attic in summer time you will need to build a "room" in your attic. Not a cardboard box or a cabinet but a "room" It will need to be well insulated with a portable ac, or air pumped in from your central air unit, but not a window unit. With a window unit it will get to "hot" and end up burning your house down. Ever crawl up in your attic in the heat of summer? Very hot and if you don't have a very well insulated room, that's the conditions your plant will have to live in (not a good thing). Attic growing cost some money to build and set up. If your only growing a couple plants it's not worth the time or money. Just find a small cab you can use down stairs, (it will be much eaisier to make and make it stealthy), then it will to set up an attic grow room...take care..

Stoner Buck$$: 389.87 | Re: attic grow Yeah, he's probably right. Go with downstairs stealth cabinet if you really have to grow. It's not really worth the cost/time/risk to grow 1 or 2 small plants though. I had this whole plan to grow a single plant inside this decorative wooden thing in my parents' house....just wasn't worth doing.

I've got a floored attic, but the heat in there gets incredibly hot in the summer. You'll definitely need to cool it in some manner.... a window ac unit. a temporary false wall and a few rolls of insulation would do the trick nicely...
I might do my next one upstairs like that so I don't have the smell drifting from the basement..... I have an extra window unit, and two windows in the attic. I could blow ac in one window and vent out the other....
Hmm.....

Well I'm just going to grow on the first floor. I'm still using the computer case grow. When setting up fans i used a 5.6V phone charger and realized that it was pretty weak so i used a 12V cord and i think i burned out the fan. now neither of the cords work. Is it possible that i burnt it out?
