This thread is primarily for members who would like to attempt an experimental dwc hydro grow, but don't necessarily have much cash...to get going. I think it works especially well with cfl lamps. This is a thread I posted back in the day, when I 1st started growing perpetually; This led to Zandors slogan...If you go cheap...You grow cheap!
Well this does work, and actually if maintained and used for just vegging; It is extrememly efficient. I promise. LOL

I have always used 3-part. I do not distinguish between AN & GH 3-part.
After 3-part, I use Botanicare products: CalMag+ "CM" & Liquid Karma "LK"
that's my Base formula. recently added AN Hammerhead 0-9-18 for flower
added to this, and I flush with Final Phase or Florakleen*
For a healthy basic starter "benchmark grow": You only need 3-part, and ph up/down.
WE started with 2.5 gallon distilled water jugs from the grocery store. I got this idea, because we were buying 30 gallons of distilled water every week, and I wanted to start cloning. I didn't want to wait on orchid pots from hydro store. I made a few of my own.
You start by wrapping tape around the opaque jug to prevent algae growth...then carefully with a knife...cut out the chosen section. I came to like the lower profile design on the right because you could use the handle. when replacing nutrients, I just replaced the jug with a fresh one. each jug used 1.75 gallons to fill up to netpot.
We made a row of clones
after a week in 5" netpots with ph'd 5,8 distilled water...from the jugs
after 2 weeks into veg; Under 1-48" green/blue fluoro tube
We used Advanced nutrients 3-part, then got LK. We use hydroton and
2", 3", 3.75", 5" netpots.
We invested in a phpen, early on, and AN ph/down. At 1st we tried using vinegar as ph down, but it constantly fluctuated...BAD!
We bought 2 lights online. A 250w diamond hps unit, and 400w highbay vertical Metal Halide. I added sensi zyme when I bought ph down. Looking back...I would've stuck wiht h2o2 instead of sensi zyme
my 1st efforts were stretched due to not knowing better, but we got about 6-7 ounces. more early grow piks later, Peace lw

you can take a cutting, and trim it appropriately, the use some rooting hormone, and stick directly into a hydroton filled netpot, and within 10-12 days the roots will start poking out the sides or bottom of the net pot.
I prefer to clone in rockwool, after many experiments and 3 different DIY cloning machines. Although I had success with the machines...I like taking 9 cuttings and stcicking them right into a 1'x1' cube, adding water to tray, spray with no-wilt & close prop box door...spritz every day, and within 7-20 days I have nice rooted clones. Lazy way if you ask me...
what I have found in hydro, is that you place a seed in a starter cube, and keep it moist. It grows.
These little units veg extremely well. I loved using them...the only thing was that after about 3 grows...they might leak.
I grew plants 5 feet tall in these, and just kept switching out rez'

Instead o using the distilled shyt, just go get yoself a free
5 gal bucket from a bakery or food store that has a bakery inside that ssells munchies n shyt. They'll give em to ya for free. Ask for one with a cover too.
Then, just put it under a downspout and wait fo rain. Its whut i do when i waz growin dwc.
