Ok. So I'm going to keep using CFL's. What is the rule of thumb on how many plants per bulb? Just keep the plant covered in light and buy more as necessary? They're like $6 each, and I can buy sockets for about $2 each. I can buy at least one set a week if need be.

The more light you can put on the plants (SAFELY) the better. I realize that you could get a fixture setup each week and add to the existing, you don't want to create a fire hazard though. As long as the heat is manageable in your enclosure you can keep adding light.

Hey shwag. I'm ready for an update. Mine are about seven inches tall now and the stems have greened up since I started the fan/paper clip thing. They're still a little too tall but they're healthy.
I'm going home this weekend and I won't be able to water them like I have been. I've been watering pretty much everyday, making sure the water gets to the bottom of the pot. I'll be gone for four and a half days and I need to figure out how to water them. I've thought about drenching the soil, but I'm not sure how long it would take to drown them. I'm thinking it will be ok for the soil to be saturated for 1-2 days, and then it will start to dry out. What are your guys' thoughts on this?

I've been in the exact same scenario, if you can't afford a reservoir, solenoid and timer, I've taken tupperwares or other disposable kitchen ware, using a sewing pin you can poke a small hole in each corner, or as many holes as necessary to maintain damp soil. Practice before you leave with a few different configurations until you find something that drips consistently, over the course of several hours. You want this going slow.

That's not really the solution I'm looking for. I just want to know if I saturate the soil, will 4 days be too long? And I don't have tupperware, cause I'm in a college dormroom. Also no supplies to build a structure above my pots.

It doesn't require any structure. Four days will probably dry out your plants even if you soak the soil. Just get a disposable food container, poke the little holes in it and set it on the dirt, so it can slowly drain to keep the soil moist for a long period of time. If not, no worries, just trying to help.

Ok, now i get what you're saying.
I have a plastic container that I can do that with. I have three pots of the same height, and one that is taller. I think I'll set that up setting on the three pots and just cross my fingers for the fourth one. Thanks for the help.

Can anyone explain kelvin ratings vs. watts or lumens? And compare watts vs. lumens?

You would be better off just googling it. You want the most efficient lights you can get. Kelvin is the color spectrum that the light puts off. 6000K and higher are good for vegging and 2700k are good for flowering. You will fing HID lights are the most efficient at providing the correct spectrums for optimal growth. They are also the best at lumens per watt with a greater pentration area. Plants are more into the the par levels than lumens. Lumens are measurement of visible light to the human eye.

check out my grows for a different type of cfl than yours..
they come with 2 fluorescent bulbs 2' long under $10 at walllyworld
i believe they already come with 6000k lights
so you can fully submerse your plants in light for cheap if you can set them close enough!
i have had the lights on for two days straight and touched the bulb with no heat issues
GET AS MUCH LIGHT COVERAGE WITH USING LEAST AMOUNT OF LIGHTS
do some research and some ebay searching..
maybe youll find some new light that interests you! HydroWarehouse Online Hydroponic Superstore
these personally seem interesting! powerful/cheap/effective | |

I don't need monster buds and I don't need to spend a lot of money. I just want this to work. Bare essentials. | HPS would be your best bet but you can definitely grow bud using fluoro's. Granted, you won't get buds as big as you would with HPS but you'll still get a nice amount. I purchased some inexpensive 2ft fluoro's off ebay (each ballast has two 2ft fluoro lights in them) for only $34.99 delivered. They may not be ideal but I've got two nice plants under them right now about 3 weeks from harvest so I can attest to them working.
