to answer some questions for you:
1. yes, it is wise to start your plants indoors. the size really doesn't matter, but note- the bigger your plant is when you stick it outside, the bigger the yield is going to be- and the larger the plant will be when its flowering making it more obvious that it is a cannabis plant. so if small if your goal- stick some clones out side and let them do their thing, I like to stick an 8 incher out side at minimum.
2. dont stick anything outside for good until its after june 1st, if you live in the Northern hemisphere. the photo period is too short up until that time, and still some strains may start flowering at this point( only a few strains will do this) but usually by june 15th your ok for just about anything.
3. you need to harden the plants no matter what size they are to outside- this helps them get used to the brighter light/more intense enviroment compared to indoors. how to do this is to take the small plant and stick it outdoors in the after noon for about 4-5 hours the first day( make sure its still very light out ) then add an hour everyday until they are outside the whole day from sun rise to sun set and she should be ready to stay outside until shes ready to come down! usually hardening should happen for a good week to two weeks to minimize stress done to the plant.
hope this helps
