hello all .. i am new to this site and about to do my first grow ... i was wondering what the flowering time on the seed sites meant ... it says 8 weeks flowering .. does that mean it takes 8 weeks from seed to being ready to smoke or does it mean it takes 8 weeks of flowering ... trying to determine the total time from seed to being ready to harvest ... thanks for any information you guys can give me

Flowering time is after the switch to 12/12. You're in vegetative before that, for almost as long as you'd like.

I feed a slightly lower veg formula from week one of switch as flowering nutrients arent required untill preflowers are visable.Usually after two weeks we are in full bloom mode.
The longer you veg the bigger the harvest,a week or two more can make lbs of a differance.
Guides say 8 weeks,this is only a guide as some people wait longer,waiting can change the final effects of the smoke,also preferance has alot to do with it.
When your buds are finished a 30x microscope should be used to view the trichombs.
When 2,3rd's are amber you are good to go.I know people who wait untill they think its ready then wait a week,unfinished buds arent nice so I recon youll know!

so i can have the plants in veg state for as long as i choose and switch to 12/12 lighting to cause flowering ?

yep,and that's what the sites are talking about, 12/12 to cutting the plant down.

once ur out of veg you put it under a light for 12 on 12 off, best lights for flowering are High Pressure Sodium or Metal Highlide after that you have to cure it for a week by hanging it from the stem upside down in a dark cold area

That's drying (cool, dark, and dry). After drying, you put it in air-tight containers (I prefer glass), burping (letting moist air out and drier air in) more frequently in the beginning and lowering the number of times/amount of time as they get drier. I like to go at least a month for curing.
