Very nice, what kind of steel and how much did it set you back?

That is Damascus Steel. It's high-carbon content makes for a very strong blade. The pattern comes from how the metal and carbon is twisted and folded during the forging process, and is brought out by a slightly acidic bath that eats away some of the carbon compounds, leaving the pattern behind.

The guy at the sword shop had NO clue what he had on his hands. He was advertising it for 1500, I paid 727 for it. I had it appraised, it's worth more like 8-15 grand depending on the name on the tang.

Yea, I've watched and read some fairly interesting stuff on the forging process, its really interesting how all that works.

Tang refers to the metal of the blade going all the way thru the handle - this is known as a full tang and is preferable in any type of blade.
