Hey everyone.
My boyfriend and I have a bit of a disagreement over how many times you should use a screen before you toss it. I just moved to Portland and they seem pretty hard to come by. I went into a shop and asked a woman working there; she got them for me but then another sales woman was like "What are you doing?! Dont give those to them!" So apparently there is a stigma against people who use screens here, but I digress.
I tend to change the screen in a bong after like, 15 hits so it still sucks nice and doesnt taste ashy, whereas my boyfriend doesnt change them until there is a hole in them. What to you all think?
If you're using stainless screens, you can pretty much use them indefinitely. When I dirty up a screen, I carefully pull it from the piece and hit it with a hobby torch. That'll burn off any excess resin, then the ash can be brushed off and viola, good to go. You will want to burn a new screen before using it anyway. Doing so removes any oils left on it form the manufacturing process and will give you a cleaner "first hit" off of it. I don't think I've purchased screens for a very long time, they're pretty easy to maintain. This all depends on how you clean your piece too, lots of scraping will kill a screen pretty quick. Brass screens will develop a hole far, far quicker than a stainless one.

Yea, they're cheap here too. I just try to avoid conspicuous consumption. If I can make something last a bit longer than someone designed it for, I feel like I actually got my moneys worth.

I'm with Osprey here...just clean the screen and you can use it again. The point is to make it last as long as it can so you're not going back to the shop again and again and people get suspicious you know??
As for the stigma, who cares, if you're not hurting anyone with your "hobby" then who are they to judge you.

since the nearest tobacco store or head shop is more than 100 miles away i value my screens enough to clean them until there's a hole in them before tossing. i always buy a pack or three when in town but for some reason i could never find them when needed so now i keep some stashed in various places so there's usually at least one handy...same for my pipes. i try to keep half-a-dozen or so around for the same reason and for my buds that drop by from time to time...it's easier if everyone has their own.
where I live it's kinda the same thing, everyone thinks you're a noob smoker if you even consider useing a screen.
That's kind of weird. I dig using a screen. When I grind my herb, if I just toss it in the bowl, it'll just shoot down the stem when I hit the bong. I like a finer grind though, combined with small bowls, individual portions and so on.
