| Food Dehydrator's PT. 2 Donnie/ Lulu, I thought I'd start another thread about this so it won't be in the grow section.
I’ve had my dehydrator for a few weeks now and I really love it. My favorite thing to do is fresh pineapple (not from a can but an actual pineapple) I cut it on the thin side and it makes them nice a crispy/ crunchy like chips and they are so sweet, their wonderful.
So far I’ve done bananas, apples, kiwi, dill weed, and blackberries. The bananas are ok but not very sweet if I do them again I might dip them in honey first or candy them. The apples were very good too. The blackberries took FOREVER and were very tart but would be good for baking. The kiwi was so so.
My sister does this share cropping thing where every week she gets tons of fresh organic veggies and last week she got five huge bundles of fresh dill weed and she already had some from the week before so I dried them on my dehydrator. Not only did it make my house smell like a pickle factory (which I like) I have an ass load of organic dill weed that should last me for a very long time.
She also got a bunch of green onions that I’m going to do and this other stuff (I forget what it’s called) that looks like a green onion but taste like garlic, only its a little minder than garlic. I want to do a bunch of cilantro too but I don’t often see people using dried cilantro so I’m sure there is a reason for that.
I’ve heard very good things about dried watermelon, mangos, honeydew, and cantaloupe (yum) and I really want to try them. I’m also interested in drying tomatoes and soup mixes. I have a few books on dehydrating and I need to get in there and try out some of the recepies and then tweak them to my taste.
Yes, dehydrated food in the stores is outrageous. I bought my dehydrator for about 100 bucks. It’s not the top of the line dehydrator but its close enough to the top where I can change the temperature according to what I’m drying and I don’t have to fuck around and rotate the drying trays or anything like that. It’s a very nice one and I’m pleased with the purchase. I think if you have a garden or just like buying your stuff in season than the purchase would more than justify the cost.
I really want to work on making fruit rollups (leathers.) You can use whatever kind of fruit you want. I just don’t have a decent food processor at the moment so I’m putting it off. I’m psyched about beef jerky also.
O BTW Donnie I haven’t forgotten about your email I’ll get back with ya shortly.
