I'm looking for a really good fantasy novel that I can read. Right now I'm in the middle of the 5th Wheel of Time book, which is a great series, but I feel I need a break from it right now. I don't want anything longer than a 3-book series, preferrably just one, as I do intend to get back to WOT in full-force not too long after. Just looking for a change of pace for a little while.
I definately want something that's different, unique, and not some cliche book full of dragons and knights, elves and dwarves, etc. Something that's really original and engrossing.
Please help this bored Wizard!

I think you ought to try "Fortress in the eye of time" by C.J. Cherryh. It's not your run of the mill. Very engrossing.

Thankyou for the suggestion Osprey. I checked out the series on Wikipedia, and it sounds pretty interesting. I see it's 5 books long though; would I have to read the whole series to finish one, continuous story, or can each book be read as a stand-alone? Either way, I think I'll at least give 'er a read.

I actually didn't even know it was a series. That book is very much stand alone. I've read it several times and hadn't even felt as though there were more I should know. It's been some time though, I should probably pick it up again.

I'd suggest "Wizard's First Rule" from the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. Although it is a very, very long series, each book is it's own story so you don't have to read them all. I'd suggest just reading the first 3 or so because they kinda keep getting worse after that.

Hmmm, lets see, Frey isn't published yet, neither is Phrese... Both of which I'm sure you will enjoy as soon as we get a publishing deal, since I'm guessing you're a Tolkien fan. Let's see what else is on the shelf of suggestions...
The Myth Adventure Series by Robert Asprin (RIP). Yeah, there's a lot of them, but they're all short and really easy, funny reads and most are good stand alones. I suggest stopping after "Sweet Myth-tery of Life" when it gets turned over to another author.
The Coldfire Trilogy by CS Friedman. Amazing series imo. The books are thick and the story is phenomenal.
The Tower and Hive series by Anne McCaffrey. Even if you only read the first one, The Rowan, it's a good story.
I'm having trouble coming up with one-offs, lemme look into the boxes of books and I'll get back to you.

Tastes differ, but here goes!
Current obsessions are Xanth by Piers Anthony - it's fantasy/comedy. Very unique in almost EVERY way - unique land, unique interpretations of things, it's really just something you'd have to read to find out if you liked it.
Other current obsession (and Xander's favorite series ever) - Dragonlance by Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman. I know, it's big & commercialized, but it's pretty good. Might be a bit too generic for your tastes (it involves Dwarves, Wizards, Elves, and was based off of a D&D adventure) but there are quite a few unique races and the plotline is pretty cool. The gods have left the world, so there are no more clerics, but they reveal themselves to the core group of adventureres whose job it becomes to enlighten the world about the gods' return (well they never really left) and also to stop an impending war brought on by the return of the evil god.
Another one that I like that is fantasy/comedy was the Magic Kingdom of Landover books by Terry Brooks (most famous for his Shannara series). Basically, a guy finds an ad in the paper for a magic kingdom for sale, checks into it, and buys it. Funness ensues.
My favorite fantasy series BY FAR FOREVER AHHH! :P *cough* is Amber, written by the late Roger Zelazny. It's a 10 book series, but it's one of the most unique ideas I've ever come across. Amber is the only true city, and the princes & princesses of that city have the magic abilities to walk through shadow, creating and finding all the reflections of Amber - including Earth. Really different, totally awesome.
And then there's the Melanie Rawn's 2 trilogies, Dragon Prince and Dragon Star. I know you said you weren't looking for stuff with dragons, but I like this one because the dragons are (become, once understood) the good guys. Another books with an extremely unique concept. There are certain genetic traits of people that make them sunrunners - able to cast their intelligence out across the rays of the sun and communicate with other sunrunners, or just observe the world around them. Really neat ^^
That's all I've got for now, If you deceide to check any of them out, let me know what you think!

Just thought of the other Piers Anthony series, the Incarnations of Immortality. There are quite a few of them, but they can be enjoyed as stand-alone stories. The first one, On a Pale Horse, is the story of how Death got the job of being death. It's both comical and serious and sad at points. The second book is Bearing an Hourglass and is all about how the incarnation of Time got his job. That's as far as I've gotten, but enjoyed them both. My mom, who generally doesn't like reading anything but books by Sylvia Brown or Mitch Album, also enjoyed this series.

The Xanth series by Piers Anthony is awesome. I used to hate those books when I first tried to read them, but recently I picked them up again and loved them.
I LOVE the Dragonlance series as well. The Chronicles and Legends trilogies are my favorites.
There is also the Belgariad by David Eddings. It's a 5 book series, but a fast read. Definitely something to check out.

If we're on Piers Anthony, I remember the Incarnations of Immortality series to be a wicked good read.
