So, some of the old timers (hehe) were giving me some names of some good books. The "something Prophesy" and a couple other series or authors.
If you are looking at this thread, please post a couple of your favorites. Books or Authors. And tell me why I should read them!
A few I would recommend:
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant - I cant remember the author but they are sci-fi books. Nothing inspirational or motivational about these books, just a good read I thought.
Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kyosaki (probably misspelled the last name) This is an book about how to make money basically. I liked it because it gave you 2 very differing views about value and managing money. I agree with the rich dad... but, I agreed with him before I read the book. So it just reinforced my beliefs.
Anyways, there is a couple. Please add to the list a couple you like!
Re: I heard about some really good books in chat...
The Ringworld series by Larry Niven (Also called the Known Space series) - very good sci-fi book, it is also were the general idea of an artificial planet in the shape of a ring in Halo came from
The Cheese Monkeys by (I can't rmemeber) - It's a hilarious book about the narrators freshmen year in college majoring in art
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas N. Adams - Another realy funy series, this is also sci-fi and it's a classic (the books are soooo much better than the movie)

Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography Of Kurt Cobain by CR Cross One of the most enduring myths of Kurt Cobain's life depicts the singer as a high-school dropout, kicked out of his home, sleeping under a bridge by the fetid Wishkah River in Aberdeen, Washington. The image is a tremendously potent, concise expression of the rejection, alienation, and sadness that infused Cobain's songs and ultimately consumed his life.
Houdini's Box: The Art Of Escape by Adam Phillps Psychotherapist and essayist Adam Phillips examines Houdini's lingering appeal in Houdini's Box, examining how the Houdini image has been instilled with infinite meaning, and then succumbing to the same temptation. As with Phillips' previous books about human behavior—lengthy, provocative essays on flirting, mortality, curiosity, boredom, and the act of psychoanalysis itself—Houdini's Box is about escapism, both as a recreational goal and as a state of mind.
MICROTRENDS The Small Forces Behind Tomorrow's Big Changes By Mark J. Penn with E. Kinney Zalesne A entertaining consideration of niche groups within America.Penn's central premise is that the Internet, changing lifestyles, and other factors now sliver the world into hundreds, if not thousands, of groups. That much we already know. But instead of being frustrated by such fragmentation—as many trend-spotters and marketers no doubt are—Penn makes it his mission to document emerging groups and assess what their impact might be.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
-An amazing book about Chris McCandless, the young man who basically disappeared from existence and decided to relocate to Alaska to live off nature. He was found dead in a bus weighing only 87 lbs.
Early Autumn by Robert Parker
-A witty book I just started, it's an easy read and very funny. I'll post a summary from another website because I don't know much about it yet, other than it's a really good book.
A bitter divorce is only the beginning. First the father hires thugs to kidnap his son. Then the mother hires Spenser to get the boy back. But as soon as Spenser senses the lay of the land, he decides to do some kidnapping of his own.
With a contract out on his life, he heads for the Maine woods, determined to give a puny 15 year old a crash course in survival and to beat his dangerous opponents at their own brutal game.

Thats an understatement, the chrinicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeleaver cross the line of 'not motivational' into 'fucking depressing'. Good books though, I liked them at least. Dont think I would classify them as science fiction so much as fantasy though. Also, they were written by Stephen R. Donaldson, if I remember right.
Other good books, anything by Anne McCaffery(though particularly The Dragonriders of Pern series, and The Rowan series).
The Wayfarer Redemption series by Sarah Douglas.
Enders Game by Orson Scott Card.
The Sandman by Neil Gaiman. Its a comic, not a novel, but it is easily the greatest comic series ever written. It won the Hugo Award, and the next year they changed the rules so comics weren't eligible because it would have won again.

Nice. Good information. I have considered reading the Anne McCaffrey books. I might pick them up at 1/2 price Books. They usually have them.
Yes, the Thomas Covenent books, I do recall they may have had some issues. I just remember the fantasy world setting was pretty interesting. I havent read them in a long long time.
One series I would suggest you NOT read is the Robert Jordan Wheel of TIme series. The first couple of books ae really good. The next 9 are slow. The author has passed away recently and the series may be unfinished. Dont pick them up. They are long and have about 100 main characters. It is impossible to follow.
I guess I better add one. Let me think... This is a series by David Eddings. There are a couple of other series by him which are really good as well. Here is the link-

I knew I forgot one! The Belgariad is very good, its a simple story, but it has really interesting characters. Very entertaining. Anyone who likes the Belgariad should also read The Mallorian, which is kind of like a part two.

Thats all I got for now, all good stuff though.
Speaking of Neil Gaiman, American Gods, Anansi Boys, and Neverwhere

I agree totally, I read the first three books after being recommended them by a friend and gave up in disgust, they just ramble on and on with the story going nowhere.
If you like Sci Fi, read The Reality Dysfunction trilogy by Peter F Hamilton, it's an awesome space opera, extremly well written, original and exciting with stunningly imagined worlds, freaky aliens, a strong horror element and plenty of sex n' violence!

I didn't like them all that much myself Spliffy, it's a long time since i read them but i found them a bit boring really. all the long songs in Elvish seemed a bit pointless as well. Although i really liked at the end with the scouring of the Shire. I think they should have found a way to put that in the movies somehow.
Maybe i'll go back and reread them.
Re: I heard about some really good books in chat...
Anything by Neal Stephenson, but start with snow crash. It's on the Sci-Fi end of this, but Snow Crash is awesome and (insert random here: it was required reading for the design of XBox live on the 360)
I just finished, for the second time, World War Z by Max Brooks. Set something like 10ish years after an all out Zombie infestation (think hundreds of Millions). Very satirical and pokes fun at society. Written from a journalist type point of view interviewing people.
Re: I heard about some really good books in chat...
Hmm.. i havent read in awhile, but my favorite book is The Great Gatsby, I think i read it my senior year, its a quick easy read set in the American roaring 20's..
And to throw in another.. my brother read these books by Terry Pratchett, called the Discworld series or something like that. They are Sci-fi or something another, i dunno my mom and him loved them, but i never read them

This book is really good, very original, if you can read it you should.
Alice in Wonderland is trippy as hell, I love it.
Oh, and Anne Rice, her historical books are very good, the things she describes just pop up in front of your imagination. vampire Chronicles is good too.
