I've read about the salt and alcohol method, but does it necessarily need to be rubbing alcohol, or will anything (vodka? wine?) work?

You'll want an Alcohol with very little sugar in it if you intend to use a consumable type. Gin or something. Rubbing Alcohol is best because it's distilled water and Alcohol only. If residue doesn't bother you I wouldn't sweat it.

The best mixture is rubbing alchohol and acetone mixed with salt. They sell a product called resinate which is awesome to clean with, I just cant seem to get the water marks out though.

i usually just use salt. i get that really coarse sea salt though.
