I've read about the salt and alcohol method, but does it necessarily need to be rubbing alcohol, or will anything (vodka? wine?) work?

You'll want an Alcohol with very little sugar in it if you intend to use a consumable type. Gin or something. Rubbing Alcohol is best because it's distilled water and Alcohol only. If residue doesn't bother you I wouldn't sweat it.

i highly reccommend buying Roor Bong Cleaner, it's alcohol based and cleans glass up a treat
