The surfers love..this was shot in mexico...
deep mainland...porto escondito...mexicos pipeline..
at the time , there was a war between the chipias indians
and the mexican government. They were fighting a man named marcos...no one has seen his face..but he is leader of th eindians...he is well educated and the ones thathas seen him say he is handsome like a prince...... he and his army is feared by the government......over land rights...human rights..
we were held up many times by the mexican army..
some places we had to bribed the officers into letting us go thru..
either with money...food...batteries..etc..

when we arrived..there was a big river flowing thru the main road..
after 8 hour drive south...we turned around and went back...and the location was just 1 hour away...

i went to a private airport and bribed my way into having a pilot fly us down, made two trips...first the crew went..i stayed back and took allthe equipment down with me...i found out the pilot flew for the mayor...lol..

when we arrived, we had no van., it was a little nissan car..we stuffed everything we could and went to the hotel....

there was a bridge jus before the hotel...it was closed..the indians was staging a demonstration....and wouldnt let out car pass...

so ..i waves some cash and asked some guys to help me carry all my gear to the hotel...

i went out for a evening surf...and ened up breaking my board in two..
snap...i left it by a garbage can on the beach...later on that week i saw ti again in a store...all patched up ...i couldnt tell it had been snapped in two.... i guess ones mans trash is anothers profit...

anyway we filmed...while the others surfed..i fished...
i caught a 97 pound sailfish and brought it back to the
beach..many on the beaches came running to me in the panga boat..since the fish over hung the boat it looked like i had a monster fish... i donated most of the fish to the village...

it was a good trip...something i would never forget...
o da weed?? we hooked up with a local surfer..his father
a blue agave farmer...also grew "da gold"...yes..it was amazing....

Good tunes nalu. I too play the guitar for frame, not fame. I'm not all that good, but once a day I like playing my heart out, and I feel sooooo much better.

Years of my past........

my father..(dead)....
was a player...from the hills of North Carolina..
He grew up with a guitar in his hands..
he always had the best guitars...Gibson..martins..
and told me of their sound..
he said"..its in the wood son....."

5th grade..
spring..last semister...
I signed up for guitar class..
There were many students in the class...
they all had their guitars sitting on their knee
looking at a piece of paper...with chords patterns..
I was the only one ..without a guitar..
I still can see my father saying...son, I know your not going to take my guitar down there and have it get all scratched up..you better earn your first one....

the teacher would ask me everyday..where is your guitar?
"i forgot" ...was getting old ..so .i told her i dont have one..
all the kids in the class laughed..

I needed to get one now..i hated seeing patty payne looking at me with her little smerk on her face...just loved seeing me getting a scolding.. i started mowing lawns..the spring grass was high ..so i went door to door..3 bucks a lawn..
the guitar i needed was 12 bucks..i can do this..i said..
its not as easy as i thought..big yards..raking..bagging,.
but i kept thinking about this guitar...

i walked into the store and saw the guitar sitting in the back of the more expensive guitars...i asked the sales guy thats the one... and went home and looked at the chord charts..D...C....G...ok this is easy..
it came to me..naturally..the problem was changin chords..from D to C... i worked on it till my fingers we raw..

next day in class...blistered fingers..my teacher was glad to see me with my guitar..she said ..u know..i can only give u a C...if you play a few chords for me..and i did..she was laughing at me..silly boy..you passed..but you will not play in the school assembley.....

it was the last day of school....i sat..among the students..
in the front section....all the other classes had assigned seating arrangements..the principle would call the grades and each would do something..on stage....

Then our class was called...and all the students stood up..
but me......they went to the stage in a line...filtering me out....alone in the section......i can hear the other kids laughing..throwing spit balls at me...it was...something i dont want to do again....i had learned a lesson...

all thru summer i played this acoustic guitar...
I met a friend at the bus stop and he said he has drums..
I thought this is it ..we can make a band...
not knowing but three chords.. we got together..
the drums blasted me out..couldnt hear me...playing.
so i got a pick up and mounted it on the guitar..
taped the hole up.it looked raw...now i needed a amp..

i asked my father and he said.. well son...
here we go again....i thought....I can make you a amp son.. i was stoked...my first amp...wow...

three days later.. my father comes home and he has this
hugh square box...with a BBq grill mounted over a 15inch bass speaker..the box was made of wood...it was stained..
and raw looking..3 x3 x3....in the back there was the amp..
one volume knob... kt88 tubes...and a little eye of a light..
he said it was from a juke box...this amp is 100 watts son.. like i knew the difference...

i plugged in..
i watched as the red glow lit up the inside of the box...
and the eye lamp slowly started to turn red.....it was the size of a quarter... i heard the 60 cycle hum hissing...
and i struck a E chord...and it rang out loud....the red eye lamp turned green everytime i strum the guitar....
it had this distortion...dirty brown sound...made my cheap guitar into a slutty filthy piece of wood.....and i played...and played...i learned rory gallegher slide and johnny winters...i had a record of led zepplin..song called "thank you"..but it was scrated and it skip over and over till i learned the part...it was also all i knew how to play...the beinging part only......i learned street fighting man from the rolling stones and played it over and over distorted....it had the sound....

i soon started playing for teen clubs on a miltary base..we set up in rooms filled balloons...and ribbons. punch..chips...not a scene u think in a ol blues joint...we all kids..and they were listening to bubble gum music all dressed up in flares jeans and turtle necks with a peace signs on a chain..pretty dresses..knee socks and hair all tied up in a bow..here I am..in my 501's with knee pads.. grass stained converse shoes..and ripped t shirt...i may have been the first punker...

we tuned up...as i was tuning my guitar... looked up and saw everybody dancing.......this was strange to see...6th graders military brats..dancing........little bows on their heads..laughing....



I told my father..thank you for the amp...he said no problem son...it sounds really good...he said....

its all in the wood.....son...

wow........im glad to see all the ridicule for not having a guitar and not going up with the rest of the class didnt stop u from playing

Great story, Nalu. It reminded me of my youth growing up with the music. But it was my older brother that passed his gift down to all of us. To this day I don't read music, but I can listen a couple times and get it. It's determination and the love for it that gets it in your head, and the blessing you feel when you've suceeded. Makes all thoses blisters minor.
