I make an herbal tea of my own devising. I'm terrible with measurements, but it's basically as follows:
Equal parts crushed eucalyptus leaf, hyssop, and mint for mild to moderate coughs. Eucalyptus helps clear the airways, hyssop is an expectorant, and the mint is just for flavor.
If you have a fever, add in some sweet melissa or catnip. Both are fever reducers, but catnip raises the body temperature and forces a sweat. It can also make you sleepy, so I typically use it before bed.
Combine all ingredients in a reusable tea bag or tea ball and steep in piping hot water for a good 5 - 10 minutes. Add honey and/or lemon to taste (hyssop is really bitter.)
I've been using variations on this recipe for a couple of years now, and while it won't cure a cold/flu/bronchitis, it's always been a worthwhile treatment. I've also added in a little weed and/or valerian root in evening brews to help me sleep.
Beyond that, I find that I crave jalapenos when I'm sick. Full of Vitamin C, and they'll clear your sinuses.
